Two questions about Colombian family norms. #1- I have heard that when the elderly arrive at the point of needing help in day to day activities they are often taken care of at home by family members, true? #2- When adult children complete their education and become employed while living with their parents, do they usually pay for room and board? Although a long time ago, when I was still living with my parents I paid my mother 1/3 of my paycheck, which I thought fair. I don't even know if that is still widely done now in the US, just curious. Gracias

When I grew up in NewYork and stayed in my parents house once I hit 18 and worked I gave 1/3 to me parents, 1/3 to the back and 1/3 to my pocket. In Colombia, what I have seen on many occasions the young adult is told to pay one of the utility bills or asked for an x amount. As for the elderly I've always experienced that care givers are the family members, generally daughters/grand daughters. Usually are plentiful. One gives showers, one cooks, one takes to doctor etc..

1) Is mostly true.
2)Not sure on this one but I am to believe if the grown kids are still at home they help out with the bills except maybe the upper estratos like 5 or 6

In my experience the elderly are cared for by family members because there are usually enough close by or the parents move in with the children. Of course this may be more difficult in the larger cities with people living farther apart. The children are usually not asked for a percentage but to help out with the bills
