I have been looking at airbnb rentals, most seem to have washing machines but no dryers? Am I expected to air dry my shirts and jeans? Surely there must be an alternative.

One alternative would be to purchase a portable dryer: http://listado.mercadolibre.com.co/maquina-secadora-de-ropa-portatil
You could also call around to lavanderías to see if any provide dryer service alone - they will certainly wash and dry for you.

That's correct. Most apartments here have a drying rack where you hang your clothes. Exito does sell driers, single and combo, but here it is considered an unnecessary expense; both the original product and all the electricity it uses.

Yes, you are expected to air dry your shirts, jeans and everything else!
With a dry climate (even in the rainy season) it takes little time and wastes no energy (which is expensive here).
All houses have drying racks, often out on a balcony or by the kitchen window.

Make sure you use fabric softener so you don't have to iron so much.

If you're staying short term, use a laundry. It takes a full day for shirts to dry. Jeans take up to 2 days.
If you're staying long term appreciate the savings.

Idk about a day for shirts and two for jeans.. In Monteria, about 4-5 hours for shirts and jeans no more than 6. I'm sure it's location driven.

You're probably right but in Medellin I agree it's usually a day for shirts and 2 days for jeans.

Just outside La Nevera (Bogota), it takes forever for clothes to dry. I live quite sensibly when it comes to money but I bought a dryer.

For spoiled gringos staying a while a gas dryer is cheap to run after the initial purchase (and if you have a natural gas hookup.)
But don't assume you will have space for it. Some laundry rooms aren't built to accommodate a dryer.

My apartment here has a 220v plug for a dryer and space, but it would be a bit tight. A gas dryer would be nice.
