" I love the Internet, new people and travel. Hence, I am looking to make international friends via the net. Furthermore, I am in the process of making my mind up where in the world I might relocate. Any information or insights you can offer are most welcome and invaluable to my decision making process. If you wouldn’t have chosen to receive this e-mail then please ignore it and accept my sincere apology for wasting your time. I figure - nothing ventured, nothing gained and no new friends met so I hope you are glad to receive it and respond when you can. The Places I am Considering Barbados (Been once before might have to go again soon) Costa Rica (2nd June [TOMORROW!]- 24th June) Panama City (Undecided whether to go and when, during my time in Costa Rica, if I do) Los Angeles, California, USA (24th June - 8th July) San Diego, California, USA (8th July - 17th July) Bahamas (18th July - 28th July) Southern [Greek] Cyprus (5th August - 15th August) My ideal location would: On the coast (I want to watch the sun set into the ocean) Safe Attractive Populated by friendly locals but at least part of the year also a major centre for tourists from UK, USA, Canada etc. Have, or at least be within 5 minutes drive of, the facilities of fair sized town/city (Cinemas, book shops, garages, super market etc.) Not too humid, too often. Heat I can handle but not hot & humid at the same time. (85F combined with 65%+ humidity I find most uncomfortable and wouldn’t want to face for more than a month or two. A dry 100F+ is better than that) Have access to reliable and preferably fast and un-metered usage Internet access. Have nightlife and party people I could take a variety of evening / day classes (in English preferably but not essential) in a variety of topics. Join groups, teams and societies etc. - THIS POINT IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS THE REST BUT WOULD BE NICE I would be really grateful for: 1- Any specific suggestions of places I should visit (and avoid) within these countries 2- Comparisons between the countries on my list from those in the know & 3- Useful general information about any or all of the countries. By the way, anyone who just figures what I am up to sounds interesting and wants to chat I’d be happy to hear from you too. I going to be roaming around over the next two months (as you can see from the above) but will check my e-mail as frequently as possible at Internet cafes. Oh yeah, any locals who know where the good Internet cafes are; that would be invaluable information. Right, last thing - some brief information about me to give any kind souls out there, who want to help me out, an idea of the kind of person you are talking to and thus what sort of things are likely to concern and interest me. I recently graduated, having studied Modern History (mainly American) at Oxford University in the UK. I am 22. My ambition to is earn my living as a professional fiction writer and or screen-writer (Yes, I am aware this message hardly reflects well on that aspiration but I am tired and in a screaming rush - my plane leaves at 7am tomorrow and I haven’t packed, paid my bills or said my goodbyes yet!) My back up, life-plan (my parents would rather it was my first choice I am sure) is Law School in the USA, if the writing really doesn’t pan out voer the next 3-4 years. Interests: Fiction (Creating and absorbing it), Cinema Health and Fitness Music (particularly Dance, Reggae (Bob & Pete T still rule the roost), Dub and ‘Chill Out’ style - Morcheeba, Portishead, William Orbit, mellow Drum & Bass etc.), Intelligent, wiitty, genuine and interesting people Politics and Current Affairs (What makes the world tick, the how and why of events that affect all of us) Travel obviously - beautiful and wild people places and scenes Partying Sassy, Smart, Sexy, Elfin faced, slim and Independent minded Women Self Improvement in all spheres Technology and the Net - I am self-confessed gadget and futurist freak Skiing, Tennis, Sailing Learning - new things, interesting things, contreversial things, risque things Dogs - Well I am British, what did you expect?! Dis Likes: Racists Sexists Ludicrous Political Correctness Cheats, Liars, Thieves (I’ve met a few) (Nothing controversial so far I hope) Cats - I love them actually but they make me very, very ill - I stop breathing eventually Governments oppressing and interfering too much in the lives of people Religion, race and out-moded concepts of nation getting between people and causing hatred and death Lack of time to experience EVERYTHING in the world People who write first e-mails that are WAY too long, so I’ll stop now and hope to hear from some lovely people out there sometime soon. Look forward to chatting, Spence "

Matapalo? Was down on the Pacific coast a few weeks ago exploring the possibility of relocating there and purchasing property. Would you like to talk?

You're seeking otu a place where the government doesn't interfere in the life of the individual?? Sorry - Utopia doesn't exist and I doubt whether you will find such a country.
Costa Rica is, indeed, a wonderful country with delightful people and a great place to live. however at your age it might be very difficult to find yourself a job and be employed legally. But that may be a good thing! If you intend to be a writer - with a particular ambition to be a screenwriter, I hope you don't think I'm being patronising if I say that I have doubts as to whether shutting yourself away in a quiet corner of the world relatively free from stresses would get your creative juices flowing. You need the stimulation of a large city, particularly one where creative people tend to gather, and where the ideas of others are likely to spark off new thoughts and philosophies of your own. You also need to rub shoulders with many different types of people - pleasant and unpleasant to see how human beings "work".
After creating a good foundation you can then take away your experiences on safari WITH you a la W. Somerset Maugham!

Sorry but you will be very disappointed with the beach and its
climate .Very few people last more than 3 months or boredom .Very few people and need A/C the whole time suggest consider Central Valley if you are coming to live or retire . Approx 90% expats or more choose this area .Ideal Climate ,other expats , infrastructure like a hospital nearby .

We consider the beach for the Tourists .Great to visit either coast to 100s of different beaches and mountains . Like nearly all you will be trying to sell and move to Central Valley where you may rent. You will then spend all your time having to go to the same beach house to look after it .

As a 24 year Ex Pat who has helped, mostly informally, dozens to relocate in Central America, CR has fewer rough edges, but same crapola, just different smell in reality

Stuart speaks common sense, my language, I have seen these 'esoteric beings' come to the tropics with high expectations, most were gone within a year, some in less than 3 months. Some small villages in CR, nothing to do basically, locals are nice, like back country people in say, Kentucky or W.Va. USA, San Jose area is cosmopolitan, Panama City even more cosmopolitan. Aside from teaching English (long hours, very low pay working black, unless you are qualified to teach International or Urban bilingual academies, diplomas and references checked.)), or working in tourism (if you have special skills in ecotourism, such as White Water Rafting etc.). Some of the websites put up by gringos describe CR as a paradise, it is if you have $500,000 USD or more to invest and can hire people to do evrything for you, same goes in rest of C.A. and S.A. as well my own article on expatexchange

Central Valley maybe good for me. I am very motivated because if I leave the USA it will probably be because I cannot get my foreign partner into USA. If I can't live with him in CR I must look elsewhere. I just am not willing to give up relative physical comfort, health and safety. As vague as that may be, it tells the story for me.

Wondering what I would need to pay others to do for me. I need to have at least one other person living with me besides my partner because I have a disability and hate the idea of living alone if my partner would die, leave, etc. I intend to have a live in housekeeper. I'm open to taking TEFL or better such as CELTA to teach English. I'm no stranger to teaching as I've been a volunteer tutor off and on almost all my life.
