Today @ www.ticotimes;
"Costa Rica is 20 percent more expensive than other Latin American countries "
But I think that's it's worth it!
Please read the article, this is not just about the price of hotels, Coca cola and gasoline.

I agree. There are way more benefits to Costa Rica than mere cost. If you are only price conscious the I here Ecuador is good. Of course in CR I can go to the grocery store and pay in dollars in a pinch.everyone is used to tolerating and or befriending expats.traveling to and staying in CR is best money ever spent

Oh, BTW
Estoy en un residente ahora! (I'm a resident now).
In advance of securing my CEDULA I visited CAJA a couple of times to inquire about what would be required to join and the potential cost to me.
Based on my $1600 a month SSI the first estimate was $217 a month and a month later $270 a month.
Now I wasn't freaked out because I cancelled my BCBS w/ $5k deductible 5 years ago when the payment went to $800!
BUT when I enrolled @ CAJA the lady asked about my monthly food cost and utilities ($400 + $60) and generated a monthly payment of $56 for me, yea!
For those who may not know about CAJA health insurance, it's a full boat. No copay, no deductible, includes prescription's, no out of pocket, it's all in!
My Nissan Pathfinder runs on LP gas @ $2.45 a gallon. I pay $6 for a haircut, $8-10 for a weeks worth of fruits, vegetables and eggs, labor around the house (cleaning, yard work, painting) is $3 an hour.
I bought a "dream" home with a $1mil view for $85k, remodeled, rewired, furnished and equipped it for >$20k.

A good premium! It is well known though, that NOT all CAJA offices take living expenses into consideration.

You get what you pay for is the old expression. Haiti is really cheap, as is Detroit and Rochester, NY. I am right now in Cancun doing a real estate show, 5 of us had dinner last night at a not so great restaurant and the bill came to $550 dollars, ouch. I could not think of a place in Costa Rica where the bill would be that much and the food would likely be better

That's okay, I need to lose weight anyhow and eat healthier. I am going to try to learn to live without a lot of less healthy American snacks and such. Gas won't be an issue for a while since I am going to "hoof" it until my SS kicks in. Can hardly wait until March. Stressing a bit but am determined to give it a go. I know it won't be paradise but it will be an experience I don't want to miss.
