Hi there,

I am a very young full of live 67 woman I will be visiting Costa Rica in the Dominica area but hope to travel across the Island on my visit to get a feel for Costa Rica and if I will spend winter months there.

I have 4 weeks and wonder if there are any expat connections I can make to entertain my idea.

I am an avid hiker, bike, scuba dive and love the water. I am well-traveled it is my passion.

I live in Ontario, Canada right now.

Cheers, to all you lucky ones in the warm Sunnyside of the world.

Cheers,
A traveling nomad

Just curious.... Are you confusing the island country of Dominica with the Dominical region?

Hi Traveling Nomad,

You should know that Costa Rica is
NOT an island, nor is Dominica a town here. You will get ten times
more out of your trip if you do some
research before you arrive. Get a guide book, read the internet, read
Tico Times online, do something to
avoid being just another dizzy Gringa visiting. At our age, it is not a good idea to travel anywhere blindly. What about
joining a tour? You might find it
more enjoyable. Do your research...

correction
Costa Rica is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island.

Give the lady a break.

So by now she knows Costa Rica isn't an island. And she has started to investigate and ask for help and suggestions. Some people need more help than others ... And that's what this community is here for. So here goes:

Costa Rica is a country in Central America sandwiched between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. If you are speaking of Dominical, that's in the south, pacific side. It is a very small community but you can get your basic amenities. I lived there for two months and loved it It can be very hot and humid. If you want to explore on your own the public bus system is reliable and very affordable BUT all roads lead to San Jose making cross country travel long. If you like a temperate climate visit the Central Valley (try towns like Atenas, Grecia). If you like rainforests and remote area try Monteverde. If you like touristy areas try manual Antonio, quepos and the Nacoya penisula. I would highly recommend you get a map that shows elevation. The higher you are and further from the ocean the less humid it may be. I would also suggest learning Spanish. It will get you far with the friendly Ticos. If you're in the Central Valley I can make a suggestion for a private driver to take you around.

Good luck and you'll absolutely fall in love with Costa Rica. I know I did the first time I went. I go every year!

Cheers

My goodness, give the lady a break. Research is a process. I have researched all the affordable alternatives and was considering the country of Dominica at one point. Costa Rica won the contest though. Good luck in your travels and I hope you find what you want.
