It's about time. Now they need to do the same with their Ecuador reports. My advice to folks looking to retire has always been DO NOT READ INTERNATIONAL LIVING. if you do be skeptical of all their claims.

Thanks Kohl,

Like I've always said and experienced first hand,

"living here in a reasonable way will cost $2,000 to $3,000 a month."

Pura Vida!

I'm not really seeing in the article where IL "admitted" exaggerating, they just increased their income recommendations. I used to read IL publications, and one time I did see where IL admitted that they only talk about the benefits of potential retirement areas - they say it is up to the reader to research and explore to learn about any disadvantages.

Jackietrehorn: what do you know about the cost of living in Ecuador? Have you lived there recently? I am looking at Cuenca as my next locale to live in for a while. I recently began reading it's Expat Exchange after reading a fellow's blog re: the inexpensive cost of living there , at least compared to living here in San Jose area. Are your comments based on actual experience there? If so, how recently? thanks.

Sport. Undoubtedly the cost of living in Cuenca is far less than the U.S. and CR. I haven't been there in a couple of years. The point I was making is that IL exaggerates how cheap things are and only focuses on lifestyle claims and never tells you the drawbacks. Cuenca is beautiful, no doubt, and very reasonable. You should go, check it out for yourself and get a feel for it. My problem with Cuenca is that it is very provincial, which migh appeal to you, the government and economy is unsteady, and the city has way too many gringos for its size.

International Living is not a "reliable source." They tell stories to get you interested in the expat lifestyle. They are promotion, they sell magazines, they sell conferences, they have sponsors. I read the daily postcards because they are fun and tell me about places. I don't accept the income propaganda. It is false.
