Are there any restrictions on importing used personal electronics into CR when relocating? (Computers, toasters, coffee makers, iPads, etc.)

Thanks,

Steve W.

When arriving by air you are allowed to bring in $500 duty free, of your personal goods.
Multiple computers could pose a problem

If you ship items, customs fees will generally apply and the $500 exemption will not apply. Customs determines value using the serial numbers on electronic items.

So if my understanding is correct I can ship my 4 year old apple desk top along with my 3 year old Canon printer. We will be shipping my wife's kitchen counter top appliance's. The shipping company averages all shipping for duties and charges $11.50 per cubic ft and includes up to $3,000.00 worth of pre paid duties. I was told to price things realistically that we would get at a garage sale. Will this be OK?

When shipping, multiple used computer and printer and other electronics won't be a problem ... as long as you don't send 10 of each-)

Problem could be getting the correct ink cartridges for the printer though...

If possible, dig out your old receipts.

Last year a friend shipped all 'new' appliances that they 'purchased' 6 months before they moved and had no problem.

When we shipped a number of used electronics on our move to CR, our shipping company required us to list models and serial numbers for all electronics. They said that Customs uses that info to determine fees. For all other items we listed garage sale values and had no problem.

Since you can purchase all these things inexpensively in Panama, shipping them is not worth the hassle.

Then one would have to pay transportation costs + import duties which are based upon Cost + Freight (C.I.F.) of the product, from Panama.

If you don't wish to ship your household goods, better off to purchase items in Golfito, in that case....but our friend had very specific requirements.

FYI you can only bring up to $500 duty free items with you in your luggage every 6 months.

Transportation costs from Panama are a fraction of the costs from USA, less if you bring them yourself. Import duties are the same either way.

One advantage is that no items will go missing if you accompany the shipment from Panama. The probabilities of items missing when shipped to Golfito are very high.
Also you are only allowed to purchase a fixed amount per year in Golfito. If you cannot wait another year for what you need, buying them in Panama makes economical sense.
