Calling all rentistas under 45 years old. I am considering applying but the potential monthly caja costs are a cause of concern.

Have you recently been through the application process?

Under 45?
Wife and Kid(s) with you?

Please can you let me know what Caja bill you were hit with in your application process.

I have been told to expect anything between US$80 and US$ 450 so some first hand testimony would really help;. Thanks.

It states in part
" Monthly cost depends on the type of residency you have —pensionado or rentista—your monthly income and your age. (If you missed it, see our advice on how to get residency in Costa Rica.)
For pensionados, the fee depends on your monthly, generally, about 8%. Rentistas under 55 pay 10 to 11.5% of their monthly income, usually $400 – $500. Once you turn 55, you’ll pay a bit less.
The good news: Your monthly payment includes everyone in your family. There’s no additional fee for a spouse or dependent children. In addition, if you are under 55, Caja payments include a mandatory pension payment that you’ll receive when you reach 65"

We recently spoke with a lawyer and was told it would be approx. $80-$100 pm, for a pensionado over 55, with a monthly income of around $1000.

I have been living in Costa Rica for nearly a year (in May). I started the paperwork for my Rentista status prior to arriving. I was just notified that I needed a new bank letter. --Someone insisted (the attorney or Immigration) that the letter be signed by a bank Manager,,,this was news to the bank! After submitting a new letter, I now have to wait another 6 months before I receive (temporary) Residency. I am not able to get the total cost of my CAJA until my application is completely processed. At which time, I've been told (naturally after spending the money to process the paperwork), that my CAJA may cost between $300-$400! Crazy! I'm living off of savings, and have no income. I can't afford a monthly payment like that! So, depending on what CAJA actually ends up costing, I may opt out and remain a Tourista, and simply cross the Boarder every 90 days...it's a heck of a lot cheaper than $300-$400 per month! - Just for the record, I was told the cost could be reduced by subtracting monthly expenses...Not something that will do me any good, however. So, this may have been a huge waste of time and
money! Good luck!

Any other first hand experiences from those under 45 year?

Wondering the same. Under 45, family of 4 moving next year. On top of bundling a good chunk of our savings in a bank, plus the opportunity cost, plus processing fees, a big Caja payment could be a deal breaker.
