Maintaining a US physical address

New Topic Newest First

For those Americans living in CR or anywhere other than the US do you still have a physical address for your health insurance, drivers license, tax returns etc? I know of mail receiving services although health insurance, IRS, motor vehicle require the address you live at not your mailing address. Trying to figure the best way to keep everything in order before I expat.

I use a mail service in Texas for my bank account and credit cards. For the IRS, check with an accountant who deals with foreign tax laws. For tax purposes, my legal address is in Costa Rica. Otherwise I would be subject to US tax laws. For drivers license, I did not change the address yet, hoping my CR residency will come through before it expires and then I will get CR license.

How about medical insurance or Medicare. I believe the insurance companies require an address you live at with a zip code for the the medical provider directory especially an HMO.

Celferis, you are subject to US Tax laws as a US Citizen regardless of where in the world your legal address is.

I have a mail forwarding address in Miami - this works fine for the IRS, my bank account, credit cards, Social Security and Medicare, I kept mu US driver's license until it expired - I could not renew it without a valid local address; now I have a CR driver's license. US Health Insurance that meets the Affordable Care Act is a problem if you do not have legal residency in the USA. I now have an international health care policy that provides coverage in the USA and abroad, but it does not meet ACA - okay since I am outside of the USA at least 330 days over 12 months.

Would you care the share the name of the mail service. I'm planning on being outside the US less than 330 days and would like to keep my ACA plan. The address you live at is what insurance company asks. Many times banks pick up those mail services for what they are and deny their use for bank accounts.

I use Mail Boxes Etc, with a Miami street address and "Unit" number - not a PO Box number. But you would need to show residency in Florida to quality for the ACA state health insurance policies.
