Buying a business in Costa Rica

If you are moving here and want to make a living legally, there are some options.
One of them is buying an existing business, and if it comes with property over a certain value, it can even be used to get your residency. If it's a leasehold property it can give you security and mobility, and still earn you the necessary funds to allow you to live here.
You can legally own a business as a foreigner in Costa Rica, but you must employ at least one national, or other legal person. Without papers you are not allowed to work. You can run the business, but not work there.
We learned a lot when we moved here and opened our furniture and decor business. If you are thinking of starting a business from scratch, you will need a lot of time, money, patience and luck. It is not easy and is always a big gamble..
Ours is now for sale as an established and successful operation, with great potential for growth. There are many hotels, restaurants and bars for sale in our lovely beach area too. There are so many opportunities.
Buying an established business, if you check into it really well, can be the simplest way to earn a living here.
If you have some money available to invest, consider this option. It can offer great rewards, and also offer you instant credibility in your local community. It's also a great way to meet others in your area.
Make sure the business you buy offers open-books and client and supplier lists, and has a transition period to ease you into the venture. It's not like buying a new car when you can just drive it away!
Has anyone sold or purchased a business in Costa Rica? What were your experiences?
