Thank you.
After I posted here I remembered that I could have Googled it.

Are you buying a car in Costa Rica? We just went through the same thing. Cars are crazy expensive there. I put a really good post about our experience on my blog - you should definitely check it out!

Hope this helps.

Thank you.
This is the reason I got confused: how could a SUV from 2001 have 270 Kms and cost about 8.000.00?
I wonder if it should have read 270.000.
I still think it's worth it to bring a brand new car from Canada.
My next door neighbor brought one from California.
However I laughed when she told me that even if I buy a new car I should damage it a little bit before sending it here.
I don't think I would have the courage to do that!

Also: are there any discounts for a Pensionato "Legal" Resident when bringing a car here?

If you bring a brand new car from Canada, verify first if the warranty will be valid in Costa Rica and if the parts are readily available. Often, there is an American version (read North America) and another version for the rest of the world and the parts are not the same.
If you have the vehicle shipped by boat, chances are that something (spare tire, car radio, etc.) will be missing when you pick it up in Puerto Limon. The shipping company will not be responsible and won't pay for the missing parts..
If you want your car to be whole, my suggestion is to drive it through Central America and enter Costa Rica at the Penas Blanca border.
In his book The Costa Rica No One Talks About, the author discusses the different options and gives good advices. He had a car flown from Miami into Juan Santamaria and brought 2 cars through Penas Blanca, one of which he had bought in Nicaragua. He also talked about his experience trying to bring a car from Panama.
Good luck!

I wouldn't use that book as a reference or to prove a point. It's complete garbage.

Check out the info here: http://costaricalaw.com/costa-rica-legal-topics/customs-and-trade/costa-rica-importing-a-car-how-much-are-the-taxes/

No tax on a brand new electric vehicle, though.

We brought a truck in with no problem...but you will pay a high price.

There are many others who have a totally different opinion of the book. They find it informative and a must read for anyone interested in Costa Rica.
One expat wrote this: If only I had read this book earlier and heeded its advice, it may have prevented me being seduced by Pura Vida before investing in Costa Rica.

I have not read the book you are talking about, but if I were to read the negative about the US, I would not invest there or move there if I was from somewhere else. We live in CR and love it, but it is not for everyone, and yes you should be careful of any transaction and know what you are doing and what you want. Have ALMOST been scammed in real estate in US also, and more robbers looking and waiting to rob our house in Florida than here. Anyone wanting to make a big buck and listens to sales pitches with a drink in their hand and their eyes half closed is probably going to be taken anywhere. Just attend a pyramid scheme presentation with a fast talking sales person, and watch the glassy eyed audience sign up.

Dear Beach1girl,

Either you are the author or a friend of theirs. If the book is so good go on amazon and give it a good review. There are 5 reviews and they're all bad.

beach1girl

Dear Fheyr13,

Maybe you need glasses. There are 6 reviews, 5 x 5 stars and 1 x 4 stars
https://www.amazon.com/product-reviews/1773022210
Unless you call a 5 stars bad and 1 star good :)

If you need a book to explain the pitfalls of life regardless where ... you have not received a proper upbringing/education and will get scammed regardless where.

Gringo prices - I live in a prominent house amid school teachers and other government workers with incomes 3-4 times my meager SSI and routinely get quotes for services double my neighbors. I get phone calls daily with schemes to get at my money. Such is life ... everywhere. Mex workers in the US are the worse for wild price quotes. Gringo prices is human nature to which the phrase buyer beware was coined.

At the same time, one cannot fault anyone who searches for information ... pro or con ... or mixed ... about a monumental change in one's life. How is a book's author less informed than a bunch of internet junkies.

I've been reading this forum for some time now and have come to realize it's immense entertainment value. The CR ex-pat family are like children who prod and poke their brothers/sisters, mostly out of boredom, but are quick to close ranks in times of attack by unwelcome strangers (read 'Stars')

Not trying to hijack the thread but ... how often are you corrected about your Spanish pronunciation? And use of formal or casual (ex tu-su)? Or do mistrakes go ignored soas not to offend? I don't know how much emphasis to place exact pronunciation etc in my learning process. Thanks.

LMAO! So funny and pretty true now that I think about it.

If you have more than a passing relationship with the person you are speaking with, they will correct you, otherwise they MAY ignore it....

Many different pronunciations by folk living in other areas of the country, just like accents in all other countries.

Hey Beach1girl,

I am so effing wrong, I apologize. I had another book in mind. Similar titles, different criticism.
