"Border Run" ideas?

Hello,

I need to get out of CR mid-Jan. Was planning on Cartegena, until I saw the airfare! Now leaning toward Grenada, Nicaragua or islands east of Nic or Panama. Any suggestions for an adult woman traveling alone? Somewhere safe, beautiful, and within reach? Would also welcome suggestions on moderate lodging. Thanks!

Have you done Bocas del Toro in Panama on the Caribbean coast? A short flight from San Jose. We recently looked at airfare to some Caribbean islands from CR but found that airfare was not cheap, although flights to Belize were reasonable. (Check Copa airlines.)

There used to be some great deals going to the all-inclusive resorts on San Andrés island in Colombia. Lovely spot.

Thank you for the suggestions! I saw that Copa Air is running a great special to Guatemala, but I was discouraged by the US State Dept warning on travel to that country. Panama seems safer and closer. I would love to see Colombia too! Maybe another trip, not during high season.

A simple one is to take a bus to San Carlos (Nicaragua), just beyond Los Chiles. If you feel adventurous, from San Carlos you can go down the river and spend a night or two at San Juan del Norte. Not a while lot there. The early morning launch going back to San Carlos is a special treat, It is a beautiful ride in jungle drenched in mist for mile after mile. Or you go from San Carlos downsteam to El Castillo. Great food at the hard-to-fine Border;s Coffee and plenty of peace and quiet. San Carlos does not have a whole lot working for it, so I would not recommend a long stay there.

Reply to DR and Pebbelita today: Thanks for the good ideas! I'd like to do both (the current airfare to Cartagena is discouraging and that destination was my first choice. Maybe when high season ends)

Well for me flying within the Costa Rica/Panama / Nicaragua was always too expensive .True flights ONLY to Cartagena is not very cheap BUT if you get an all inclusive deal from a travel agent which includes flight round trip, double room with balcony 4 star hotel on the beach Lovely rooms at the Decamaron ( sp?) A first class High rise, which is right on the beach with all free floor shows ,disco etc,,i And believe me those who imbibe will get their money's worth I used to watch the heavy drinkers and hope that they would not put them out of business. It is like a cruise without sailing,,, plus all you can eat and drink it was well worth the package deal for 3 days and 2 nights...It used to be $500 for ALL INCLUSIVE It used to be $500 per person (Hard on us single folk who have to pay almost double as in cruises ) ..Highly unfair I think...maybe punishing us who prefer to be single.LOL... but we also like to have fun.. But as a single woman traveler I would not dream of going ti South America alone but Cartegena is different they guard the tourists 100% and even have police patrolling the beaches so I always felt and was very safe in the part of S.A
Please tell Sean (ILUVCR) that S.A means South America, (,cos on one persons post his reply was "where is S.A? "

Belize ? I am not surprised it is s=cheap to fly there,Not many dare take the risk VERY Dangerous and Belize City is ranked the murder capitol of the world (per capita )Anyway it is dirty and grungy as well as dangerous and like Honduras is a place I would recommend NOT to visit UGH,So what if they speak English ? dead is dead in any language....Take care!

Thank you Pebbelita! I am leaning toward a direct flight SJO to Bocas del Toro for a couple of days. As you mentioned, how much is safety worth for a "soltera" traveler. Priceless. Plus, I've heard it's amazing and have not yet seen the Carribbean coast down here.

We have given you some suggestions, but are you aware that you DON'T have to stay out of the country for 72 hours, just long enough to get your passport stamped and possibly have lunch UNLESS specifically told by a border control officer, which occasionally happens?

Khol,
You are right.
There were 2 ladies living here and they would take a bus to San Juan del Sur for the day (excursion)
Also: one of them told me she would sometimes take a taxi (I think from Liberia) and ask the taxi driver to wait for her at the border while she would get her Passport stamped and re-enter Costa Rica right away.

Georgene, you may want to check out the airline websites in th link below, for cheap flights that are offering some very good prices.

Another option would be to fly from San Jose or Liberia to Costa Esmeralda airport in southern Nicaragua and rent a condo at Hacienda Iguana - a gated beach community. For lodging check: https://iguanasurfrentals.com.
