Suggest you contact the schools on your list that you are considering, inquiring on how a student with no prior Spanish language, will fit into existing classes. Is there a beginner class? Or begin the Spanish lessons while still at home...

English will be the prevalent language spoken at CRIA as many International students attend this school.

It may be a good idea to both enroll in private lessons or language school and hopefully one in your immediate area, as it takes longer to travel a short distance than it looks on a map.

Good luck!

Sounds like an exciting opportunity for you and for your daughter. My family is currently living in Monteverde for a year. Our kids are younger than your daughter, but we had some similar goals when we began our search, including learning Spanish with kids who had little to no Spanish before we left. I have a website about planning family gap years abroad. You might find my post about "Finding the Right School" helpful.

I also have a few articles about learning Spanish, which you'll be able to find on the website. We started our year with a month of intensive Spanish and a homestay in Guatemala, which turned out to be a great choice for our family. Good luck and good for you! What a great opportunity for your daughter!

"mmm how did you know that post was made?" Because I responded to the post made by Cameron599 according to the info on the forum.

Didn't you post previously that you have been able to delete/edit your posts, when no-one else has been able to do so?

NO I never said such a thing!
Please produce the post which you are accusing me of posting !
The post you say I made! I said verbatim "I WISH like some people., that I was as clever or conniving enough to DELETE or change posts to look like far more typos were made than really were made !

Mystery solved!
On a separate note: I find it amazing when people say that it's a great opportunity for a single mother to come here with her daughter forgetting to tell her that she can't overstay 90 days without leaving the country. Also: what about Medical Insurance?-If she or her daughter have a medical emergency will she be able to handle it?-Last year we had a lady from Arizona here at Cocomarindo who fell while taking photos of the monkeys. She was sent to San Jose for a hip replacement and then sent home on a private plane for almost US $20.000.00.At the time her boyfriend paid for the trip and the expenses hoping to get the money back from her Insurance.
Now her son wants to put a restraining order on him to keep the money.
I know the question was about education but this lady needs to know about "the whole picture"!
I'm always amazed how the newbies who come here and try to make money in the internet suddenly become experts!-Like the person who wanted for me to go to their website to read about how they bought a used car!-I don't follow people who have no regard for the laws of this country!
When I immigrated to Canada I did it in a legally way and when I came to Costa Rica I also did it in a legally way!-I heard that there are conversations going on about "catching" the perpetual tourists. Not sure though if it is true!
Now about OldPro: I hope he is well!
We haven't heard from him in 9 days!

Thanks for the honest response. My plan is to only stay for a year to work on my Spanish fluency then my daughter will start high school in the US.

Do you have a reco on attorney/company that can help get perm status. One company wanted to charge me $5,000 to "help".

Thank you for your response. Since you are only here for a year did you get a Visa or are you a perpetual tourist. Do you have any info on references to get a long term Visa one company wanted to charge me $5,000.

Yes...thanks for solving the mystery!
It will probably take longer than your year of staying here to get the 'usual' temporary visa....however you may be able to apply for a 'special permit as a student'. Getting Permanent Residency takes 4-5 years of living here.

This way you will be here 'legally' and covered by the social healthcare system but financially this 'visa' may not be worth it.

This lawyer seems to respond to questions.

Good luck!

This is a great alternative and not considered home schooling.
My sons, 9 and 13 both attend International Connections Academy successfully for a U.S. diploma. Web page http://www.internationalconnectionsacademy.com
