"Costa Rica's renewables conceal dependence on oil"
"Costa Rica produced 98% of its electricity last year without fossil fuels but the sustainable success story unravels with the rising demand for gasoline and cars"
Sad but true!

If you click on the link in that article to the Waze Traffic Study, you will notice that Costa Rica has the worst traffic rating (0.74) of any country on the list. Dead last. I can attest to the horrendous traffic as I commute daily in, through, and around San Jose.
Maybe when more countries in Sub-Saharan Africa an the Middle East start using Waze, our ranking will be better. Then again, maybe they have it figured out and we should just start using donkeys and camels to commute.

Nothingbutnet, my condolences for your "commute daily in, through, and around San Jose."
I can drive into San Jose Centro in 30 minutes on Sunday morning or it has taken 2+ to get out of the city on a rainy Friday afternoon.
I don't think that I'd live here if I HAD to do that!
I hope that you've had the genuine please of travelling through the beautiful countryside?
Pura Vida! (in many parts)

San Jose traffic--just one so the reasons I would never live in that city again. 1 year in 2002 was enough and the traffic is much worse now. Good Lord one trip last month I sat in traffic for an hour to go one mile and just turned around and went back. Donkeys and Camels would seem like racecars in typical SJ traffic!

On New Years Day, an acquaintance Chris Reeves, a permanent resident of CR , 43 yrs. died in a traffic accident on the way to SJO after a few days of surfing, as a special Christmas gift from his wife. He is survived by his wife and 4 teenagers. He had a degree in Culinary Arts, and for a few years they owned and operated the 'Cafe de Artistas'. Their eldest son, has just started university so they were now 'splitting their time' between the US and Costa Rica
I know that this could happen anywhere but it points out that circumstances can change in an instant.

Kohl, I'm very sorry for your loss. Of course, traffic accidents happen all over the world, but that doesn't make it any sadder or easier for the family. My condolences to the Reeves family.

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of this young friend of yours. It is so true how things can happen and change quickly without warning and have huge impacts.
I have coming up to CR with my husband February 11 and we are spending 2 weeks there. This trip has been well planned for months, but I have been researching everything about CR for over a year. The reason is we are looking to retire there in about 5 years. We are currently in our early 50's. I am a long time REG nurse who works with geriatrics in our ED and husband electrician working for a nickel company in our city.
Just in October I was with 3 other ladies riding my beautiful Harley Davidson which I am very comfortable with and ride. On our way back from being out of town.....some how my bike lost control and I flew off (went unconscious according to reports and my friend riding behind me). Was flow to the ED that I work in. Had a head injury with 2 bleeds which are fully resolved. Spend 7 weeks in hospital on our rehab unit as this is protocol and treatment for what happened to me and my age...............as a nurse and clinician I review my injuries also having fractured ribs, small surgery to my left hand and separated shoulder to my right all this is on the mend, but have been left with a cranial nerve injury to my right eye which is my biggest problem right now. In time and recovery there is a high chance will return to normal, On a positive side....i'm not blind and did not lose my eye.
As a result I now have to be off work for a few more months due to the type of injury (despite not being the worse case) but because I work in health care I cannot just go back to work until my doctor and the other issues are fully recovered.
Goes to show you how unexpected and quickly things happen and when there is no warning or explanations as to why?
I am very sorry about your friend who was so young and his family.
I am very, very lucky and thankful at my survival and minimal serious injuries although I cannot work right now.....it could have been worse. I almost feel like I was a miracle and extremely thankful.
My trip to CR is well needed now and I hope that it brings me some miracle recovery with my vision.
My heart goes out to you and his family.

Hi Faye, Thank God you survived your bike wreck and are recovering nicely. I retired on disability in April of 2010 and in September of 2010 I slid sideways on my Harley and hit a guardrail at about 35 mph. The bike stayed upright and my left leg was crushed between the guardrail and my bike. Initially I thought that I had hit an oil spill. I was going down the on ramp so there wasn't any oncoming traffic or I would have been a goner for sure. The surgeon told me 3 things before I went into the first of 3 surgeries I had because of the wreck. I could have died, I could lose my leg and I had lost over half of the blood in my body. Well I didn't die or lose my leg and during surgery they gave me 2 blood transfusions. My lower left leg was shattered and my left ankle was broken. They put rods through my leg above the knee down to my ankle. I was in the hospital for a week and I saw my doctor weekly for the next 3 weeks when they performed the second surgery. They took the rods out and kept me in the hospital for another week. Other then my surgeon the only one of 6 doctors that I had at the time was my neurologist. I have 4 incurable diseases, being bipolar, arthritis, Parkinson's and dementia. My neurologist told me no more riding a motorcycle. I haven't ridden one since. My youngest son was following me in his car and was helping me immediately, telling me not to fall asleep because when I hit the guardrail my peanut helmet flew off and hit me in the forehead. Well you know scalp wounds bleed a lot and I have a scar about 2" x 4". I remember telling my son that I must hit an oil slick or something. He checked it out and said he didn't find anything on the road. I was in denial for 5 years before I could face the facts that my Parkinson's had caused my wreck. It affects your motor skills and has caused me to blackout for just a few seconds. I got my bike repaired and put it up for sale. I still turn my head and look for the bike when I hear the distinctive sound of a bike going by. I've had 6 motorcycles starting with a HD Sprint 350 ccwhen I was 18 to a HD FatBob 1600 cc when I was 58. The other 4 bikes were Japanese bikes. After my wreck I went from a wheelchair to a walker to a cane. It was 6 months between my wreck and when I could walk unassisted. I'm moving to Costa Rica ???? on May 2nd permanently. I'll be 65 and be retired for over 7 years. I'm ready to go.

Motorbikes are responsible for the majority of traffic deaths here.

Cecil, are you aware that CAJA, the socialized healthcare system here, will not cover you until you are in receipt of your cedula, which may take a year or more after applying for Residency? Neither will private insurance companies cover pre-existing conditions. Rx's cannot be shipped here either.

Referring to Cecils comment of having some serious medical concerns and to advise him, in advance. Many move here, unaware that Rx's cannot be shipped and it has caused problems .

Meaning that more people have died while riding motorbikes. I have given up riding ATV's here due to being in a similar incident a few years ago.

Seeing how cyclists drive there I'm surprised any survive, though I'm sure many are helped to their final reward by equally wild car drivers. Rules of the road seem to be interpreted very liberally.

I had initially thought about getting a small scooter instead of a car but I have seen seen too many posts about cyclists getting hurt or killed I think I'll just get a car after using the buses and taxis first. Thanks for the heads up.

Kohl, Thank you for the information. I'm a retired federal government employee and one of my benefits is I am able to continue my health benefits into retirement as long as I have been carrying a plan for the 5 years prior to retirement. I have been in contact with my carrier, Blue Cross Blue Shield and they have an international section just for answering questions. Since my Medicare doesn't extend past the United States, BCBS told me I may have to pay for my first visit at a doctors office but ask them to bill BCBS so that BCBS is in the system and future bills will go to BCBS first and then to me if there is any remaining balance. In other words BCBS is my primary and CAJA will be my secondary when I start it.
