This speaks as much to government incompetence or ineptness as it does to anything else.

Just like successive administrations have failed to plan for the increase in traffic over the last few decades, they have also failed to plan for population growth and water usage. So instead of accepting responsibility for the water problems in this country, the government blames mother nature, illegal well-diggers, and builders.

According to NationMaster statistics, Costa Rica receives more annual rainfall that any country in the western hemisphere. There is no excuse for not tapping into this surplus of rainfall during the rainy season and storing it for the dry season...except for ineptness and incompetence.

For our part, we use a hose to empty the used water in the washing machine into a covered (important to keep mosquitoes out) 50 gal. plastic barrel, which we then use to water plants.

Even though we had quite a lot of rain, at the end of the rainy season last year, it was not enough to repair the damage to the past drought.

When we were in Florida, we had 2 rain barrels to use for plants and grass.

I ordered on here from Super Rosvil but the company never bothered to deliver it. When rainy season starts, this year I am going directly to where they sell them and get one or two. I've seen them when on the bus to Alejuela.
