Life In Costa Rica Is A Gamble

The truth of this blog, by Juan Sebastian Campos, published here http://qcostarica.com/blog-life-in-costa-rica-is-a-gamble/
became very real for Bruce McCallum, a Canadian teacher who was fatally stabbed during a mugging in the coastal tourist town of Puerto Viejo on Sunday after he rose early to snap photos of the sunrise.
You can read the sad story here https://goo.gl/cYyu00
How many other foreigners have gambled and lost their life savings and some their life in the land of Pura Vida? I have known quite a few during my stay in CR.
The Costa Rica No One Talks About is a MUST read (http://www.francoissylvain.com/) for anyone considering visiting, living or investing in Costa Rica.
It could have saved Bruce's life.

The story of the death of this Canadian
is a terrible tragedy. People visiting CR
need to realize that we are still a developing country, with average family income well below that of US or
Canada. Given that understanding, just
about anyone could have warned him not to go out alone with fancy
photographic equipment. It was a recipe for trouble. I come from the Capital of the US, and I certainly would
not expect a different result if I went
out alone with valuable equipment.
I would expect to be mugged. It's
tragic that his death happened in CR.

I did pull it up and it is something that needs to be purchased.

I have no doubt that bad things happen in CR. I lived in Florida for a total of 15 years. And when I first moved there, it was hard to grasp the number of murders in south Florida that still continue. Bodies found floating in the canal, people murdered in their yard etc etc every day.

In addition, in the US, for years I have read news of violent killings in post offices and everywhere even in small towns where you would not suspect such a thing would happen.

I absolutely refuse to go to Miami by myself, and avoid it even with others. Extremely dangerous especially if you do not know where you are going.

Are we targets as tourists and foreigners? Absolutely. But in the US also. If you were to read the percentages and stories in US, you would also have to say that it is a gamble to live there.

What do you do? Well, for one, a large percentage, of course not all, involve being at the wrong place at the wrong time, or even a good place at the wrong time. Lots of these situations take place at night, near bars, among drinkers, or people with brazen language that attract problems.

Wisdom is needed where ever you live and using your head and being alert. If we all read and focus on all the bad that can happen on any given day, no one would leave the house, and it is not necessarily safe there either.

The book could have just as easily been titled, "Life in the US (or any other country) is a Gamble. As for me, I am going to enjoy what ever I can, where ever I am, and pray for a good and safe day. And whatever the cost is for the negativity of that book, I will eat a chocolate chip ice cream cone from POPs instead.

Common sense must be used when carrying expensive photographic equipment. When I am away from home, I carry mine in a kids-type back pack, and put it away after use...not hanging round my neck.

I do go out very early in the mornings to take photos, however I stay around my neighborhood...and with my dogs as company.

My sympathy goes out to to this Canadian mans family and friends.
