Hi. I am married to a Costa Ricense. We have two children 9 and 11. I will be taking my kids to live in CR 8/2018. My husband will stay behind in the US for a yr or 2 to settle everything here (we have a home) while the kids and I go live where he has family.
Has anyone filed for residency. I know I need our birth certificates and my marriage certificate authentitized by our state and then the Costa Rican embassy in the US prior to leaving. I see they are requiring financial certification. What kind of financial certification?
We are also bringing our dog.
If anyone can offer advise, I would be most greatful.
Thank you.

You and your children would be required to apply for residency based on marriage to a CR citizen, unless the children are already registered in CR. There is government fees for this, but under this status no additional financial information is required . Your application could still take up to a year or more and during this time you will not be covered under the CAJA health system.

Hi, I would like to place a follow-up question on this thread. I'm planning to relocate later this year and will apply for residency. I have the same information regarding cost as mentioned in one of the answers here. Nevertheless, I started to scan for companies offering the application service and encountered some pretty horrendous fees, mostly around 2'500 USD per person and application. Even if the fees of the authorities are included, question is: is it worth it??? Is it so difficult to go through the application process by yourself?

Do not hire one of those on line companies. Do all you can and hire a lawyer. Some people do themselves, but I would not unless fluent in Spanish, and someone to show me what building and what line to get in.
Ours cost $3600 for 2 of us.

This website shows the government fees that all applicants must pay whether they 'do it themselves' or use a lawyer /residency expert.

Thanks. Yes, I have realised that I need to shop around for another lawyer. I write "another" because I already have one who closed the purchase of some land a few years back. When I asked him, the price was also with him around 2500 USD. So it seems that price has been spreading around to others than the online companies....
