How is mail service in Costa Rica, does UPS and FedEx deliver there? What about post office boxes, are they a safer more secure way to get mail?

You now have to be a legal resident before you can get a PO box.
UPS and FedEx does deliver but don't expect overnight delivery.

Import taxes can be high.

Thanks, I am talking about mainly documents so I don't think import tax would be an issue and I'm not sure UPS or FedEx offer over night to any country other than major business hubs like London, Sydney, Tel Aviv and such.

You mean that you are not one of those, who intends to move here and keep shopping at Amazon... 8-)

Sending out with FedEx usually means it sits for a few days in Panama.

In Grecia, when we had a delivery from UPS, they called us from San Jose in lickety split Spanish. I did not want to go all the way to San Jose, so they said they could deliver but not to PO box. And since we lived on a coffee farm at the time with no way to deliver, we had to meet him in front of a cafe. We received what we ordered like that.

Hello,
When my documents were sent from Canada to my lawyer's office in San Jose through DHL it took 2 days.
However when a registered letter was sent from Portugal with additional documents to her office in Playas del Coco it took 2 months.
In fact they arrived here 2 weeks before the 2 months but the postman was sick and they said they couldn't deliver any mail even though my husband had been to the post office when the documents were already there and they said they couldn't find anything adressed to our lawyer.
My husband explained that he didn't want to pick up the letter, he only wanted to know if it had arrived.
Later I remembered that I could check it online and that's when I found out the letter was already in town.
I emailed my lawyer and she sent her secretary to the Post Office and finally she was able to get our documents.
Also: my son sent us a Christmas Card in 2015 and it arrived on Easter 2016.
Pura Vida!

The local letter carrier (Mailman) where we used to live near Belen tried his best to sell us Amway products. I wasn't sure if I should answer the door or not when he came to the house!

The post office in Grecia has a little area and window where you can order Amway. Who can understand? But it is part of the post office.

I would not invite in the house, but if you want Amway, he's letting you order from your house and I am sure will deliver.

I do not believe you need to be afraid to answer. And if never interested, just tell him.
