" Hi Folks, i am looking for any information on a possible move to Cyprus from the UK. Any help would be appreciated. I am visiting the sland from the 29th of April as a rec trip to see what property is available to buy or rent. I am also interested in possible purchasing a small business but I understand this must be joint owned by a Cypriot? I have heard however that this rule has now changed for E U nationals. can anyone clarify this? Any help appreciated and if anyone wants to meet and have beer on me whilst I am on the island feel free to let me know. The beer by the way is in exchange for any useful information, not an invite to all and sundry for a freebie!! "

" Well, Spikeyman - What did you find? Do you think you''''ll move there? I am considering the same idea myself. I am going to be there in August 2001. I going to stick in my intro e-mail for you and anyone else that''s interested. Hope you have time to write back I love the Internet, new people and travel. Hence, I am looking to make international friends via the net. Furthermore, I am in the process of making my mind up where in the world I might relocate. Any information or insights you can offer are most welcome and invaluable to my decision making process. If you wouldn’t have chosen to receive this e-mail then please ignore it and accept my sincere apology for wasting your time. I figure - nothing ventured, nothing gained and no new friends met so I hope you are glad to receive it and respond when you can. The Places I am Considering Barbados (Been once before might have to go again soon) Costa Rica (2nd June [TOMORROW!]- 24th June) Panama City (Undecided whether to go and when, during my time in Costa Rica, if I do) Los Angeles, California, USA (24th June - 8th July) San Diego, California, USA (8th July - 17th July) Bahamas (18th July - 28th July) Southern [Greek] Cyprus (5th August - 15th August) My ideal location would: On the coast (I want to watch the sun set into the ocean) Safe Attractive Populated by friendly locals but at least part of the year also a major centre for tourists from UK, USA, Canada etc. Have, or at least be within 5 minutes drive of, the facilities of fair sized town/city (Cinemas, book shops, garages, super market etc.) Not too humid, too often. Heat I can handle but not hot & humid at the same time. (85F combined with 65%+ humidity I find most uncomfortable and wouldn’t want to face for more than a month or two. A dry 100F+ is better than that) Have access to reliable and preferably fast and un-metered usage Internet access. Have nightlife and party people I could take a variety of evening / day classes (in English preferably but not essential) in a variety of topics. Join groups, teams and societies etc. - THIS POINT IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS THE REST BUT WOULD BE NICE I would be really grateful for: 1- Any specific suggestions of places I should visit (and avoid) within these countries 2- Comparisons between the countries on my list from those in the know & 3- Useful general information about any or all of the countries. By the way, anyone who just figures what I am up to sounds interesting and wants to chat I’d be happy to hear from you too. I going to be roaming around over the next two months (as you can see from the above) but will check my e-mail as frequently as possible at Internet cafes. Oh yeah, any locals who know where the good Internet cafes are; that would be invaluable information. Right, last thing - some brief information about me to give any kind souls out there, who want to help me out, an idea of the kind of person you are talking to and thus what sort of things are likely to concern and interest me. I recently graduated, having studied Modern History (mainly American) at Oxford University in the UK. I am 22. My ambition to is earn my living as a professional fiction writer and or screen-writer (Yes, I am aware this message hardly reflects well on that aspiration but I am tired and in a screaming rush - my plane leaves at 7am tomorrow and I haven’t packed, paid my bills or said my goodbyes yet!) My back up, life-plan (my parents would rather it was my first choice I am sure) is Law School in the USA, if the writing really doesn’t pan out voer the next 3-4 years. Interests: Fiction (Creating and absorbing it), Cinema Health and Fitness Music (particularly Dance, Reggae (Bob & Pete T still rule the roost), Dub and ‘Chill Out’ style - Morcheeba, Portishead, William Orbit, mellow Drum & Bass etc.), Intelligent, wiitty, genuine and interesting people Politics and Current Affairs (What makes the world tick, the how and why of events that affect all of us) Travel obviously - beautiful and wild people places and scenes Partying Sassy, Smart, Sexy, Elfin faced, slim and Independent minded Women Self Improvement in all spheres Technology and the Net - I am self-confessed gadget and futurist freak Skiing, Tennis, Sailing Learning - new things, interesting things, contreversial things, risque things Dogs - Well I am British, what did you expect?! Dis Likes: Racists Sexists Ludicrous Political Correctness Cheats, Liars, Thieves (I’ve met a few) (Nothing controversial so far I hope) Cats - I love them actually but they make me very, very ill - I stop breathing eventually Governments oppressing and interfering too much in the lives of people Religion, race and out-moded concepts of nation getting between people and causing hatred and death Lack of time to experience EVERYTHING in the world People who write first e-mails that are WAY too long, so I’ll stop now and hope to hear from some lovely people out there sometime soon. Look forward to chatting, Spence "

" Hi I read your comments with interest, hoping there''d be lots of useful replies .... and there weren''t! Did you get any further? My partner and I are very keen to live in Cyprus and have been looking into it for about a year now, with little success, we really love the island and its people and it''s a way of life we would love compared with all the rain and stuff in Britian. Anyway if you get any info which may be of help or come across any websites which have been of use to you please share this with me! Best of luck. "

We have lived in Cyprus for nearly five years now and we love it.
Finding a job may be a problem as there is still a requirement for a work permit here. It really depends on your trade or profession. Of course once Cyprus joins the EU this should not pose a problem.
I can only speak for schools in Limassol but they appear to have excellent education facilities albeit at a cost. To my knowledge all of the international schools charge term fees.
My husband , who is German and I, who am British married here in 1998, we had a wonderful church service with all the traditional UK trimmings and the reception in a traditional Cypriot taverna. The reception cost in total approx. CYP1,000 for 120 people! And some guests tell me it was the best wedding they had ever been to. The cost of marrying here is so cheap compared to UK and so more relaxed.
If you want to know any specifics drop me an email at

Good Luck
Regards
Vivian Nagel.

Spence, I know that you posted here over a year ago now, but I thought that I'd reply in the hope that you're still logging on somewhere! I'm just starting to think about moving abroad (Cyprus is my main aim at the moment) so any help/info on travelling in general or moving will be most welcome (from anyone reading this). You seem to have had a huge list of places that you'd visited - how did you find them (not on a map - what were they like!?!?!) I was pleasantly surprised to see another wannabe writer - I thought I was about the only one (who'll admit it that is). That's part of reason for wanting to move - I want to explore all that life has to offer, other than the pub down the road and my parents constantly hassling me. Anyway, don't want to write an essay, but I'll just finish off with a bit about myself - 22; love all animals (that aren't spiders or creapy crawleys in general); want to write; love children; like cooking (and not too bad at it); love the sun (in the sky, although the newspapers not bad if you want a laugh); currently work in admin (despite my general lack of gramma and spelling); interested in computer (working with/on them as well as building/maitainingetc). I think that about does it. Chicky.

I have been living in Cyprus for over a year, moving from London. It is now possible to work in Cyprus, and I am looking into that possibility myself as the cost of living here is going up. I think the basis of the possibility is to set up a company and become self employed. I haven't seen a lot of evidence of this happening yet, but have seen adverts offering help in this area. I will be looking at becoming self -employed in Web and Graphic Design. I already have a site and will be well placed to help small businesses in Cyprus with marketing material and a web presence. If you get a chance have, a look at my web site at http://www.geocities.com/vsaumarez

Please let me know if I can help in any other way.
