We are a family(2adults1child) looking to move to Cyprus. We have cypriot family already out there so we should be able to get information about housing/legalities etc. There is however one question that is one our minds that we feel that only ex pats can halp us with. What is best, private english speaking or greek state schools? Also what system is used ie 'A' levels or more european type qualifications? I know that it might be premature as my son is only 7 but this move will be for keeps and I want it right before we move. I would be grateful for any recommendations or information.

Hi. You didn't say which part of Cyprus you are moving to but if it is Nicosia I can pass on my own experiences. I've just been over during the half term and looked at 3 English schools for my 7 and 10 year olds. These were American Academy, Junior School and Falcon. Of these, only the Junior School follows the English KS1 to KS5 system. At each they were required to sit entrance examinations in English and Maths which take between 1 and 2 hours. Falcon was the only school to charge for this (CYP£25 per child). One problem we faced was which grade they should enter as the system in Cyprus is different - if the birth date is in June or later you may find that your child may be recommended for a grade 1 year lower than you might expect. Fortunately my daughters 'aced' the exams at 2 of the schools and were offered places at the 'right' grade - we chose Junior School ahead of American Academy but you need to visit them yourself and make up your own mind. Generally the standard of education in Cyprus is much higher than the UK although for English schools this comes at a price - around CYP£2500 per year (much cheaper than UK private schools though).
Hope this helps. Paul.

Thanks Paul, we are planning to stay in the Limmasol area as thats where my family are based but your information is very helpful. Has anybody got any more info they could add? I see there is a school called Foley's, what are they like from a parents point of veiw. I have looked at their web site and it seems ok, are there any better/different choices in the area?

Hi there,
I wonder if anyone can give us some information on Cypriot state schools around the Limassol area as we will be visiting Cyprus in October with a view to moving early next year. We have a number of private English schools to arrange visits to but would like to also have the opportunity of a Cypriot state school. Any information would be really appreciated. Our children are aged 8 and 6.
Cheers

My family and I have also decided to take the big leap and move to cyprus later next year. All is sorted accept for one very important matter, appropriate schools for my 2 girls (3 and 7). We have been looking at a number of schools around the Paphos/Limassol area that will accept english children but they all seem to be private (thus incurring a high price). Does anyone know of any State schools that will accept children that do not speak Greek.
