Hi

I will be looking for employment in an office enviroment when I relocate to Cyprus, can anyone advise me if you need to be fluent in Greek to get a job. I am going to start take lesons this year but wondered how much it is actually needed as most people we came across talked English. I have had trouble finding someone to teach me in my area has anyone waited till they got there then went to classes.

If anyone has any ideas this would help.

Thanks
Nikki

Hello Nikki. Do you need to speak Greek? It depends on your view point. Would you like to pass some pleasantries with the locals, I know I would and by now, you've probably learnt to say lots of things. As for jobs, hotels seem to ask for both languages, you can either be an English person who speaks Greek or vice-versa. If, however you were to work for a property development company, such as PAFILIA in Paphos, they prefer to employ English speaking staff as Secretaries and PA's and Customer Service Staff as these are the front line staff for client contact and when most but not all of the clientele are British, Greek is not necessarily a pre-requisite for employment in Cyprus. How are you getting on? In Cyprus yet? Gracie06

Hi Nikki
It isn't necessary to speak Greek but a little does help!
I took lessons at night school in UK for 8 months before we moved out here in March 2004.
Since then, I took some private lessons with a tutor in Erimi for about 6 months. I can read, write and get by in conversation.
I've also found a really great language learning site called Before You Know It and you can choose the Lite (free) version. It also allows you to read (and write - if you wish) or you can choose the phonetic version. If you can read the language - you can also pronounce the letters. As almost every letter you see is spoken - it's a great step forward to being able to speak the language.

Good luck
