We have been reading this site with interest and wonder if someone can offer us some practicable advice ??

We have talked of moving to Cyprus for many years but have now decided that we would like to do it later this year or early next, wanting a better quality of life for us and our two sons of 8 and 17.

We have various issues which we would appreciate some guidance on:

Firstly, we would like to live in Limassol, but have an 8 year old son who would need to go to school, is anyone able to recommend a good english speaking school ?

Secondly, we are in the unfortunate position whereby we will have to work - my husband is in the construction industry - is there much employment around for English workers ?

Thidly, we would be renting initially - can anyone recommend some nice areas to start off where we wont be isolated and be able to meet and be involved with others ?

We are coming out to Cyrpus in July to do some extensive exploration so if there is anyone out there that would be able to offer us some practicable guidance we would appreciate it and possibly meet up for a beer and a chat.

PLEASE, if anyone can assisst with the above queries, we would love to hear from you.

Hi....I was very interested to read your message about your interest in moving to Cyprus. My husband and I are currently investigating a move there and we also have two children (7 and 12). I have been looking at all the private schools as I have been advised that they will best suit our children. We are very lucky in the fact that my father in law and his family live near Limassol (they are Greek Cypriots) but as we are both born and bred English people this is still a very hard decision. We are planning to sell up and rent for a year before potentially building on a plot of land my father in law has bought. I was wondering (as you posted this over a year ago) what you did next. We will be looking for work when we are there, but have been assured by our family that this will not be a problem at all (!!!)

I would be interested to hear any feedback as this is a huge step for us

Thanks

Yes, you do have to pay for your children to attend English schools and they can be quite expensive.

For a young child, it has been proven it's better to send them to the local Greek speaking school. They will soon pick up the language and as they are young, there is no real fear of making friends or feeling out of place by not being able to speak the language as it's only as we get older that this kind of fear sets in.

For older children, it is more difficult to adapt and so it may be better to pay privately for an older child.

Whatever happens - don't let any property companies tell you it is very cheap for schools and that there are loads of jobs available - as that is not true but it's a ploy they use to get people to purchase property!

Do your homework first by researching as much as possible. Come out for lots of visits, see different areas too as not all places are ideal for finding work - particularly those that are mostly tourist locations such as Ayia Napa, Protaras, Paralimni and a number of areas in Paphos. Work is easier to find in Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca.

I am happy to answer any questions.

Good luck
