Moving to Cyprus

My family (myself, husband and 10 year old daughter) are intending to move to Cyprus within the next year on a permanent basis. My husband already has an offer of a job at the American Embassy in Nicosia but wants the family to be based in locations surrounding Tala in the Paphos Area so we are looking to buy a villa with a pool and space for 2 big dogs!! My husband fully intends to make the trip to and from Nicosia on a daily basis!!! I currently work with the National Probation Service, as a Community Service Supervisor but also have qualifications in horticulture and catering and spent 14 years as a PA in ICI. What I need to get to grips with is English Language Schools/International Schools in the Paphos Area. I would be grateful for a list of such schools and contact details plus an insight into yearly fees, entry requirements for these if known. I initially intend to take a year out of working (first time ever, other than maternity leave!!) to integrate myself and the family into Cyprus life but part of that year will also be undertaking a proof reading and writing course with a view to working for a magazine.

Hello Roy, I thought I would write and update you.

Remember me? We were the family whose husband wanted to make the daily trip from Paphos to Nicosia and back. Having done it a few times, we have to agree with you that whilst the road system is a "doddle", the journey time was too great and too tiring on the back of what we know now to be between 8 and 12 hour shifts!! Although we are not yet, still not yet resident in Cyprus, we are hoping to be by July 2008. We are basing the family in the Larnaca district so that the journey to and from Nicosia is between 30 and 40 minutes depending on traffic congestion. As for schooling, we have picked Pascal English School near Larnaca. Its a school with a high reputation that extracts the best from its students by developing their full potential by encouraging and nuturing their students. It is hoped that my daughter will join in September 2008.

Your help was invaluable in putting us on the right track. Kind regards, Gracie06

Hi Gracie

We also hope to be out in Cyprus in 2008. We have bought an old village house that require renovation.

My concern is that the village has a bit of life during the day but it is very quite at night. If we do not make freinds with the locals it will be very lonely & I am not sure how easy that will be. If you are not living in the bigger towns or an expat community how easy is it to make friends?

If you need advice about tax & double taxation etc try www.auditchart.com

Good luck Maggie

Hi, if you are EU citizens, I would suggest you take a look at this site for more information on moving to Cyprus : http://www.cyprus.gov.cy/portal/portal.nsf/dmlcitizen_en/dmlcitizen_en?OpenDocument

And this site for health & medical information: http://cyprus.angloinfo.com/countries/cyprus/healthinsure.asp

You would also be advised to thoroughly research the in's and out's of the Turkish Occupied North of the island before considering living or purchasing property in Famagusta, Kyrenia etc. The island has been occupied after the turkish invasion in 1974 and property purchase, particularly proof of ownership of land - is a minefield, to say the least.

Hi Craig, are you a Greek speaker? I just wondered because, although I have no estate agency experience I have a passionate interest in property and wondered if there are opportunities for English (only) speaking estate agents?

Hi, There are plenty of estate agents looking for English reps as so much of the property in Cyprus is sold to Brits.
The wages are not great but you can earn extra through commissions.
