We had been making arrangements to move to Cyprus in 2008. Unfortunately due to all the world's financial problems and the down-turn in the UK's housing markets, we are now contemplating staying here for the immediate future - annoying, but there it is! However, not being one to dwell too deeply on this point, I wondered if it was at all possible for EU nationals to home-school children in Cyprus so can anyone advise me if they do it and how I might go about it. My daughter is almost 12 yrs and roughly what are the costs for doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I saw your message (with sympathy) and felt the urge to respond.

We are a family of 2 boys, 1 x 12 years and 1 x 10 years. We moved to Bulgaria last August thinking we were starting a new and better life. The downside is we have been thru ALL the schools here, including the private ones and have been so bitterly dissapointed with the poor standard of education that we have put our children first and are now set to move to Cyprus in September.

The reason for writing is that I thought it would be a good idea to home school however in reality it has been far from easy. Firstly, all relevant internet sites assume you are a professional and write (sometimes) at such a level that it is hard for you to understand. Secondly (and most important) confinement and isolation is the crippler. Having 2 children helps as they can play (fight!) with each other however they need the stimulation of others and this year in Bulgaria has been a hard lesson for all of us.

If you are "teacher minded", have 100% of your time for their attention, have the patience of a goddess/god, have other children for yours to socialise with out of school hours, then go ahead. Knowing what I know now we would never have embarked on such a stressful move. We have used our savings to book the children into one of the best private schools to give them back all the lost days of enjoyment and hope they can forgive us for the "year out". It wasnt all glum but by goodness we will all be glad for some normallity next September!
Good luck with your endeavours
Lynne
