We are thinking of moving from Oz to Cyprus and will be looking to buy a property. Any advice would be helpful. We would like to be close to an expat community but away from tourist resorts

my advice would be to tred very carefully. the property market in cyprus is swamped with 'developers' with no integrity and the island is swamped with ex pats who are still waiting for title deeds(!) - and dont think getting a lawyer will help you, they are just as bad. my advice would be to rent ...

G'day mate :)
well i think a good way to start would be looking on property web sites see what kind of property you fancy. where do you want to be inland? coast? be wary of developers, but there are some good bargains to be had from the prices ive seen. Have a look at the RICS Cyprus property index you can google it youll get some info on average property prices, and get an independent lawyer definitely NOT recommended by the agent or developer. Ive trawled some forums and discovered a good lawyer based in Nicosia called stelios stylianou, very thorough and hes an expat to so I had no problems in communcation. Always good to recommend competent professionals especially as its its a minefield out there. The lawyers email is s.stylianou@ns-lawyers.com and his numer is +357 22 445800.
Good luck

You buy i nthe North of Cyprus at your own risk. Do some homework on the Orams case. Anyone who buys there risks losing everything. The South is a much safer bet.
