Can we move to Cyprus?

Hi all,
After a crazy conversation with my wife, we are looking to relocate to Cyprus. I am an IFA, she is a nurse/midwife. We are thinking to buy a small apartment outright and then work to support a modest lifestyle.

Question is regarding employment liklihood and any advice you think relevant. We will be in Paphos in 3 weeks to holiday and check out the opportunities.

Any and all comments/advice is most welcome - thanks!

Lovejoy Hi!

Well your wife should not have any difficulty finding work. There are plenty of private clinics and public hospitals which are of a very high standard..well the ones ive seen anyway. There is a sizable expat community in Pafos so with the rights contacts and luck you should be able to find work. If not successful in Pafos you might want to try a bigger town like Pafos or Nicosia for work. As for property be wary of developers and their hard sell! but there are some good bargains to be had from the prices ive seen. Have a look at the RICS Cyprus property index you can google it youll get some info on average property prices, and get an independent lawyer definitely NOT recommended by the agent or developer. Ive trawled some forums and discovered a good lawyer based in Nicosia called stelios stylianou, very thorough and hes an expat to so I had no problems in communcation. Always good to recommend competent professionals especially as its its a minefield out there. The lawyers email is s.stylianou@ns-lawyers.com and his numer is +357 22 445800.

Good luck!

Hi Rangersfan,

Thanks for the info - this is so much more than I hoped for and very, very useful. As you say, it is always good to get a personal recommendation.
We are going to view a couple of properties whilst out there, and I have to speak to a chap in Limassol about working on th e island. The journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step ... we have made that step. It is another dull and foggy day in West Cornwall where we live. A most beautiful part of the country but the weather is getting worse.
Thanks again Rangersfan - much appreciated!

Hi Lovejoy,
If you have no dependant children you should be able to find enough work between yourself and your wife to fund a decent lifetstyle.
Paphos has a large expat community.
Property prices have dropped and many owners of resale properties will take offers well below the asking price now so don't just pay the first price.
Be prepared to barter.

Hi,

I've been living in Cyprus since March 2004 after we moved from UK on a permanent basis.

I would advise you to first of all keep any funds you have in the bank and rent somewhere in the beginning rather than buying property.

Several people we know have bought property and either through work issues, finances, dislike of the chosen area are now desparately trying to sell and nobody is buying just now.

We pay €450pm for a 3 bedroom semi-detached bungalow on the outskirts of Limassol.

Don't think for one minute that jobs will be so easy to come by as the recession is also in Cyprus and the wages are poor in comparison to UK.

Firstly, you should do your homework on jobs in the area you are looking to move to and also in other areas of Cyprus. For instance, Limassol pays better salaries than Paphos like for like and Nicosia again pays higher as it's the capital.

I am working for an offshore company working 36hrs per week and my salary is a bit over €1300pm gross. I reduced my hours from 40 per week and have a half day midweek (I work Mon - Fri only). My salary is very good based on 5 days a week.

Other staff in the same company work 5 days over 7 and on 24/7 shifts with a starting salary of approx €1050pm for the same number of hours on average.

Office jobs will pay anything from €800 to €1000pm and some employers will require you to work split shifts. You take 2hrs off at lunch and then come back and work till around 7pm. Some companies give half day off on Weds but you will have to work on Saturday too.

You may end up buying a property to suit where you work and then find out the job isn't quite what you hoped for or were informed. It happens a lot and people do move jobs quite a lot in Cyprus. There is no loyalty on either side....

So, I'm telling you to research thoroughly and do not take it as read that you will walk straight into a job neither let an estate agent tell you any differently.

Don't get me wrong - we love living here and wouldn't change anything we've done. In fact, we haven't been back to UK since we left it so that shows how much we like it.

I just prefer that people come into it with their eyes fully open and understand the pitfalls.

It's unlikely you will be offered a job before you come to live here permanently so if you do decide to take the plunge, make sure you have enough funds to tide you over in rental, bills, food and essentials shopping, initial setup fees for downpayments on electricity and telephone supply and you will 99% be sure to need a car as it's impossible to get around without one. If you can have all that - and make sure you can support yourself for at least 12 months without having any financial income from an employer, then - go for it!

I had a job to come to as I transferred from UK with my employer but it wasn't what I was informed and I left after 4wks. I got work 3wks later in an estate agents. 45hrs a week for Cy£350pm that's less than €600pm in today's money..... I stayed for around 12 months and found my niche in employment I'm in today but have changed employers 3 times in the same line of business to get where I am now.

I wish you all the best.
