Hi all,as you can tell from the headline topic im new to this forum, having browsed a little i must say the questions and answers are very informative. My particular question is one that will have been asked a million and one times,of course its regarding moving to and working in cyprus, thats a million and two, lol. Seriously though,we are a early 40s couple who will both be made redundant christmas 1012,we are due a nice windfall but would be reluctant to put all our eggs in one basket and buy anything over there just in case things go belly up. We are both hard working individuals but with no particular skills as such,im actually a fork truck driver and understand i will not find anything along those lines over there,i am actually a pretty decent cook but with no qualifications in this line of business. Would qualifications be essential for jobs in the catering industry? We would both be prepaired to take courses over here in the uk to help us find something suitable,im in the process at the moment of taking a psv course, some sort of airport pick ups drop offs would be my prefered choice but anything will do to make ends meet. Thats enough from me for now, looking forward to all the job offers coming to me soon lol.
Many Thanks everyone.
Alan

My goodness what a negative post!
As an American currently living in Cyprus, let me refute some of the previous poster's statements.
Cyprus is not a hostile country. I cannot imagine why anyone would say such a thing. I have had pleasant dealings with everyone I have encountered. There are notarmed guards at the airport. As far as I know there are no random Visa checks. In the time that I have been living here (one year) NO ONE has ever asked to see my alien registration papers.
I can also tell you that you can rent a 2-3 bedroom villa, unfurnished, with a pool for 600 euros a month. At least that is the going rate in Eastern Cyprus. There are a lot of properties on the market and so rents have been dropping.
It does not cost $9 for a box of cereal. You can get it for around 3 Euros a box. If you don't buy a lot of imported goods, the food is not that expensive. Pork is cheap, around 3 euros a kilo. Local produce is generally reasonable.
As a tourist you can come and stay here for 90 days with no problems (you don't have to show proof of funds as the previous poster stated).
My highest electric billl was 30 Euros for 2 months, though I have not been using much Air Con.

Well if that reply was to try and deter me from moving to cyprus it very nearly worked. Its good to hear peoples point of view but surely its not that bad, armed guards, pulling you in at all times, checking bank accounts,i thought i had logged on to the afghanistan forum,it sounds like a police state lol.We were over in cyprus 2 weeks ago and i saw many many english working in bars/restaurants etc,i also couldnt fault any cypriots that we met whilst there, very pleasent and obliging, maybe some people have had a bit of a bad time while over there, certainly sounds like it to me.
Put me off NO,but still looking YES.
Regards
Alan

donnad, if you were to read the OP's first post you would see that they are British so the issue of visas does not apply as it does to Americans. Your view of Cyprus seems to be very blinkered. I have lived here for almost 7 years and many of your comments are complete nonsense.
