Moving to Brno on April 30th 09

Hi, I have been offered a job in Brno on a salary of 1100 EUROS Gross per month. Is this a good salary for a single fellow living and working in Brno? Is it hard to find accomodation before I go over? Ideally I would like to have already gotten accomodation before I arrive? Can anyone help on how I go about that?

How have other expats found relocating to Brno? Is life good?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm from Ireland by the way.

Thanks!!!

Hello, I lived in Prague for 12 years, not Brno but I have some info for you. Not a bad place to live, but not a cosmopolitan as Prague. Life will be a bit cheaper there and the nightlife is OK I believe The money you have been offered is managable. You will cover bills and will need to look into private health care if your employer does not provide a scheme. Not many people speak as much English there so go to www.expats.cz and log on. This is a local CZ website that has a wealth of information for foreigners. You will get some contacts with English speakers living in Brno for sure. In addition, landlords in CZ are notoriously difficult so be careful. Usually it is two months deposit and a months rent upfront and then the agents fee. So multiply your flats price by 4 and that will be your fist cough-up. DO NOT accept to move in on the premise that things not working will be fixed. Let them fix it first. Otherwise you will have endless drama in getting things done. www.sreality.cz os another website that is in english too and you can get an idea of the market availability. They usually post pictures. If you are single you will probably need a 2k+k. This means a bedroom living area and bathroom toilet. k+k stands for kitchen(kuchyne) and bathroom (koupelna)
I hope this helps.

Hi Slainte, Congratulations you should have a great time in Brno! The weather has really got better here now, like summer.

The salary you mention although not a fortune is better than average for Brno and you should be able to live, eat well, travel a bit etc.

In my experience clothes and stuff are cheaper in the UK (and Ireland?) than here. The choice here is not so wide either

As long you don't have a mortgage to pay anywhere it's fine.

If you want a car bring one with you as second- hand they are more expensive here but public transport is very good.

For specific up to date info on Brno and accomodation etc. check out The Brno Expats Forum.

Good luck and see you in Brno!

Thanks guys for your replies!!

I have booked my flight into Bratislava. Can I just get a train from the airport in Bratislave straight to Brno? How often would they go and how much would it cost?

IBM have offered to get me temporary accomodation for the first few weeks. Should I avail of this offer (I do have to pay them) or should I keep looking around?

Also I read somewhere that you can purchase a 3 month ticket to travel around Brno, does anyone know how much that would cost?

I will also need to buy bedding when I arrive, do you know of any cheap stores that would sell a duvet/quilt at reasonable prices?

I know, alot of questions here and I thank you all in advance.

S

Hello again, here are some answers.. There is no train to Bratislava airport to train station.. You will need to get a taxi to city centre or a bus. BEWARE taxi's can take you for a ride..pardon the pun! Ask someone about a reliable company. do not take a no name ..you will pay very dear. Thy take € now, so it is OK. Negotiate the price before hand. and the entry to cab should not cost more than €1,50 or so. I suggest you ask IBM to get you something for a few weeks..set a limit on your budget to them. This should be all inclusive.. i.e. electricity, gas and maybe services and V:A:T. That way you can look around at areas that are convenient for you and find out good tips from colleagues on the city in general. You want to be central and well connected to your work from oa commuting point of view and want to be able to go clubbing and not drive. There is a zero tolerance for drinking and driving in CZ.

Regarding linen etc..ask your colleagues . They will point you in the right direction..
Good luck!
