Hi folks. Hoping for some advice and the answers to some questions. I'm looking to move abroad and the Czech Republic is one of the places I'm considering. I do have a couple of hurdles however. To begin with, I'm on social security disability. I receive only $885 a month. Am I going to be able to survive comfortably there on that? For me, comfortable means internet and air conditioning (if air is necessary). Also, I'm a felon and a registered sex offender in the US. Is that going to be an issue as far as residency is concerned? Before I get any snarky comments, I met a young lady in a bar nearly 20 years ago who turned out to be underage. I'm not a rapist or a child molester. Those two issues are also the reasons I want to leave the US. Any advice or answers will be much appreciated.

Suggest starting with currency conversion calculation. $885 USD converts to ~16,709 CZK.

In viewing other Czech R Expat forums, the discussions suggest local salaries range from 15,000-21,000 CZK per month. Cost of living more expensive in Prague; less expensive in other communities.

Your answer will also have dependencies upon lifestyle requirements. Are you single, consider roomate(s), house, flat, rent/own? Do you require auto, or is public transportation sufficient? Live in innner-city Prague, neighboring community, or else?

My overall estimation is that $885 USD may be a pinch in Prague, but may suffice in other communities...hope this helps.

Having lived here for almost 15 years, I would be careful about moving to a non-English speaking country. I have finally learned to speak modest Czech but am still having trouble with TV or locals speaking fluently with slang. Sixteen thousand k? is bare bones in Prague. Looking at communities approx 25-30 km outside of Prague would be advisable. Life is great here...no violent crime to speak of and a very civilized and friendly population. Finding a job can be a problem if you don't speak Czech...possibility of teaching English if you get a TEFL certificate or similar. Public transport is perfect. I just turned 60 and fee for a 5 month transport pass (around Prague only) is only 1,100 kc/mo. Hope this helps! Mike

I meant to say that the fee for a 5 month pass around Prague is only 1,100 Czech Koruna which is only 220 Czech Koruna per month.. This includes all bus, tram, and subway fees. There are other programs for seniors for travel outside of Prague. Bus and train connection to outlying communities is excellent. Mike
