We moved to Sonderborg, Denmark in July this year with a view to have our kids learn Danish and understand the culture and traditions. Having lived around the world for the past years, we placed our kids in the International School of Sonderborg. We have had nothing but trouble since. Teachers are not qualified to teach some subject, especially Danish. The Danish teacher has had no teaching experience whatsoever. Most of the kids speak Danish, even though the language medium is English. Kids in Year 6 and below attend only 4 hours of school a day. Kids in Year 8,9,10 are grouped together in one class. There is no ICT, Art, Humanities. It is mandatory to sit for 10 O'level subjects, including German! In short, it is not a wholly international school, rather a Danish school that just happens to speak English. I would seriously think twice before deciding on the school.

are there other options? Did you take your kids out? We are researching schools in the area with the prospect of relocating in the fall. We are looking in Flensburg, germany too, but I havent had any luck with international or english speaking schools. Any advice?
Thanks, Shannonosp@gmail.com

Hi, Unfortunately the choices are few! I would also recommend avoiding Copenhagen International School, at least the "upper" class. It is the most dis-organized, unhelpful school I have had the misfortune to interact with. My daughter finished her final two years there, and it was appalling. What's worse is when they no longer receive tuition, then they are slow to do things such as forwarding final transcripts to universities for their graduates! We had to go and pick them up and have them expressed to our daughter's school. If we had known how awful the campus was (no library, or cafeteria), how poor some of the teachers were, and how disorganized their systems were, we would not have accepted the position. Truly horrible.
