Hello

There is a possibilty to move to Denmark (around aarhus or roskilde) sometime early next year witjh my family. For the moment, it looks like it will be only one salary for a long time (until my wife has suffucuent Danish to find a decent job) and we were wondering about the minimum net monthly salary to survive. I would be grateful if you can also reason your arguments (rent, market, tax, etc...).

Thanks in advance

I lived outside of Copenhagen so I can't say exactly what it would cost to live in Roskilde or around there. I have a family of four and we paid $8000 a month to rent a 3-bdrm townhouse. We had a rental car that cost $3600 a month for a two year lease. Food easily cost us $2000 and that's without eating out much. Going to McDonald's for four people cost us $80! Other restaurants would easily cost us $200. We would often grocery shop in Sweden because of the lower costs and more choices. Phone service, electricity, tv/cable fees, cell phone fees, added up to another $1000. You will pay 50% of your salary on taxes. If you buy a car you will end up paying for two more cars with the amount of taxes added. It's not a country where you can save any money whatsoever. But then, that's the whole point. All your money goes to pay the taxes that are a forced retirement fund. I have a friend who is in her third year of Danish. She's hoping she can finally get a job. Don't count on your wife getting a job any time soon. Good luck!

I agree, Denmark is expensive, but not THAT expensive. I have been planning for months.

$8000 per month is about 40,000 DKK per month. That buys a luxury property. You can easily find a suburban home for rent for 15,000 DKK per month.

A car for $3600 per month? Seriously? What is it, a Jaguar? Yes, Denmark car prices are about 3x USA because of tax, but $1200 buys a luxury car in USA.

Real working class Danes buy used, ten year old cars.

I used to live in Boston, Massachusetts, and the more I study costs, the more Denmark seems like Boston.

Be a smart shopper. Discount sales do happen.
