We have thought it might be fun to have motorscooters in EC. Any thoughts from anyone, availability, safety, etc?

Tonskip-- They are readily available here and not terribly expensive. I would suggest you watch how the Ecuadorians drive and determine for yourself if you want to take a chance riding a scooter. Carol

We are bemoaning that we will have to sell our Vespas before we move. I know that our friends in Cuenca say the roads are a bit rough for scooters and we may want to invest in a two stroke motorcycle for our adventures. I would be interested to find out what you decide. We started a scooter club where we live... can you imagine one in Ecuador... how fun!

There are no VESPA dealers in Ecuador. Many low cost Chinese scooters are available for around $1200. Higher quality Japanese scooters cost around $2200.

KK2, I don't think you have to sell your Vespa. You can take it with you and pay the shipping and taxes if any.

Unless you are a diplomat, you cannot bring a Vespa to Ecuador. Ecuadoran law prohibits importation of used vehicles. Some new cars may be imported, but the duty is high. No motorcycles or scooters are on the list of approved vehicles.

If anyone decides to start a scooter club, please list it on this forum so we will know. We would love to be a part.

Where are you in Ecuador? It would be fun to meet others interested in scooters if not a real riding club! Especially after hearing about the bicyclists who were robbed during their outing.
