Geriatric Care in Cuenca

Post New Topic

Our escape to Cuenca will now include my 89 year old father in law.
His health is good with the exception of his dimming eyesight due to macular degeneration. He likes to be independent but only as long as we are close by. Are there any senior living facilities in cuenca where he would be amongst English speakers. I know that's a tall order but i'm sure we're not the only ones who have an aging parent and can't leave them behind in the States. Discussion or suggestions appreciated.

At some time in the future we will need aged care ourselves. With the increasing number of expats coming down to ec its a problem that has not been addressed. Being alone here in old age is not good.

In general there are no senior living communities as Ecuadoreans care for their own aging parents. Your best bet would be to rent an apartment or a house which had a maids quarters where he could have a little independence and then hire someone to help him or accompany him.

My husband for 2 years has been stating that this would be the best business to get into. Redo an old colonial building.
We do not have a medical background as well.....the stumbling block. He says hire people.

Perhaps a group of investors would be the answer.

Assisted living, only in Ecuador as opposed to North America.

Interesting thought.

Cheers all

There are nursing care facilities in Ecuador. In fact there are more then most people think. It is still in its infancy as a business model in Ecuador.

In the past they have not been used by Ecuadorians. Most people don't have enough money to afford services and have always cared for their elderly. The wealthy pay to have live in care around the clock.

I am going through this situation right now with my mother in law in Ecuador. I have located three places that look like a good option in Guayaquil. I visited one in Cuenca
but from what I saw when I visited it two years ago is that it would not meet most requirements. Quito has several. However, it is in my opinion only
that using such a service is viewed with a stigma by most Ecuadorians. However, it is being used more often. You also find numerous advertisements
of people looking for this type of work. However, great care should be use in selecting this type of service.

Another issue that few seem to think through before making such a move is what
will happen to your estate when you pass away. Believe me when an Ecuadorian dies the flys come out of the closet or I should say the vultures are there like in many places. The real problem would be if you have property and heirs you are setting them up for a real headache and the high probability of some type of scam or theft in the settling of the estate.

We are sure to hear of some horror stories in the coming years as a few of our expatriate friends pass away.

Can someone give men names of nursing homes and/or assisted living homes in Ecuador?

PDXDAN,
This is a good intentioned response.
What are you escaping from and where?
Have you spent some time in Ecuador or any other Latin American countries?
As for your father, wow, 89... That is neat. I would recommend and adventure trip with your eyes wide open to see if you are comfortable with the change in location for you and family.
Cuenca is only one location in the country and you might want to visit as many others as possible before making a decision.
Of course, if you have been here and spent time traveling around you would already know that.
I am sure there is some living facility available but I am not sure what to compare it to, USA? Might not be a facility that would compare to the average you have in mind. Good luck.

pdxdan,
I just re-read your post and must say I missed that you were coming from the USA. Sorry about that.

pDXdan,
Have you considered a live-in assistant? I have one and it works out well most of the time. Not expensive at all either.

Are you in Cuenca? How much do you pay?

I agree with the concept, first stated on this thread by Vandtor, of a live-in assistant.

Another concept: Mexico is years ahead of Ecuador in assisted living facilities. Especially, perhaps, metro Guadalajara.
