Are there any micro breweries in Ecuador? Are there any hops or barley producers? Is it legal to brew beer in Ecuador? From what I have tasted in beer in Ecuador, they need allot of help. No selection at all.

We recently retired from Canada to Manta and miss the selection of "microbrews" that we are accustomed too. I believe hops and barley are available but, a limited selection in Ecuador. Our neighbors to the south and Columbia on the north have a more developed supply-chair and market than here in Ecuador. Here is an interesting website link which may give you some leads. http://www.bolsonweb.com/cerveza_bolson_patagonia_argentina.htm

And, think about it....there's a huge beer market in Ecuador but, limited selection. Maybe, a business opportunity for you!

Yes, in Quito and Cuenca that I know of. As for a business opportunity, perhaps where there's a big foreigner population.

Locals tend to stick to Pilsener and Club Verde. To a lesser extent Bud, Heineken and Corona, and people really haven't acquired that taste to demand that kind of beer.

Here in Gye or even Manta, I don't see a big interest.

There is only one good brewpub in Quito and it's called Santa Espuma (Saint Foam)...It is located on Whymper near Orellana. It is very, very good, I can attest, and is owned by an Ecuadorian Gentleman who had lived in the states for years and had developed a taste for homebrewed beer.

The old "Turtle's Head" brewpub, started about 18 years ago by some Brits and sold about 3 years ago is not very good anymore...the equipment (I believe they brought in from abroad back then) was sold to the owner of the Savoy Inn Hotel and I have been told, they have beer on tap, as well, they are supplying the Turtle's Head. It was so-so and the Pale Ale was terrible. They may wish to sell the equipment and/or you may find out information from the lady there.

I have also been told that there is a brewpub in Banos and I believe it is connected to Marcia's and Jim's Posada del Arte, Hostal and restaurant there. As far as the coast, I do not know.

I do know that the owner of SE is bringing some things in, and I believe that one can actually grow hops here, as well, bring in your own hops pellets. Malt syrup can be purchased here and as far as brewer's yeast, I'm sure it can be purchased, although I do bring in my own Canadien wine yeast. One might have to speak with the owners of the one and ony, beer monopoly here, Pilsner. I believe Club is made by them also. One can also "malt their own grain" if you are so advanced.

I had a small organic winery and am in the process of starting that up. Years ago I purchased a capper and some other accoutrements for my husband to start to make small batches of beer, in 5 gallon sizes.

Please keep us posted if you open your own microbrewery. Over the years there have been smaller breweries that started up here, one was called Kruger...and was probably the best but was around only for a few years.

Do you know where they serve this brew in quito or how to get ahold of someone to inquire about buying this beer?

daninternationalliving

They just started and are making just enough for guest consumption right now, but the brews are turning out really well at Rio Blanco Bed and Brew between Otavalo and Cotacachi. http://www.rioblancobedandbrew.com. Julian is getting more dialed in with each batch.

I have been living here for 4 years and searching myself. There is about 10 microbreweries in Ecuador. Baños, Cuenca, Guayaquil, Canoa, 5 in Quito, and my personal favorite on the beach in Moñtanita. www.montanitabrewingcompany.com. There is also many home brewers in the country. You can buy all the ingredients here and take certification classes here in the country, in english. All the equipment can be custom made here and all the ingredients can be purchased. If anyone wants specific information on where to buy equipment or supplies I can push you in the right direction. To answer the question for the Canadians in Manta, you can buy an OK beer in a bar called Gnome, and a great botteled beer, called Umiña in a bar named Krug (I think). Hpe this helps

Nomadchef; Thanks for the info. I expect there are many of us in Manta interested in really good Beer. Could be a business opportunity in the future?

Ok, For the Manta Ex-pats that want good beer that is close to you: if you have facebook check out http://www.facebook.com/CervezaUmina?ref=ts,
or no FB you can go to the web: www.montanitabrewingcompany.com
or
http://www.hosteriaecuador.com/.
each one of these makes great beer close to you. 1 is in manta, one in montanita, 2 hours south, and one is in portoviejo, 20 minutes east; he is a german master brewer and the best around. He also distills his own whiskey, rum, vodka and many other things. you should check him out. his name is joe. he knows all the microbreweries in the country, trained most of them and can tell you what are the best ones without a biased opinion.

I spent 7 weeks in Banos this summer. I went to the "brew pub" there several times. I got dragged there really. The beers are $4 and they don't even make them there. They import them from some place else, and the beers are terrible. Very flat.

On the bright side, the food is very nice and the service is good. If you want a nice dinner, then visit this "brew pub." But stay away from the $4 beers.

nomadchef
  1/14/2014 11:31 EST

I have been there many times, the food is always excellent. Craft Beer, new to this country, seems to be up and down depending on the day. Traveling through Ecuador for 5 years, I have seen and tasted most of the craft beer revolution.

Hands down, best craft beer and bar is in Montañita. The bar and brewery is directly on the beach, the beer is top notch and they serve world class sushi. If you make it down to the Montañita area definitely check them out. $4 beers, not flat, and worth every penny.

There is a great little brewpub in the old town of Quito called Bandido Brewing

I think there is also a bottled craft beer going around called Andes which I tried once

GringoinQuito

There are quite a few micro brewery's in the Quito area. It's becoming very popular. I can vouch for Bandido Brewing, great beer, run by 2 guys from the northwest USA. As far as hops, they are not growing them in Ecuador.

Hello,
I would very much appreciate the location of equipment and supplies to brewing. I just completed my first year in Ecuador. I have brewed beer and made wine in the states for 40 years, and produce a good product, but do not know where to find equipment and supplies here. I am located in Vilcabamba. When I am better established I can buy by the truck or container load, but want to start out small and build my market.

  6/5/2015 03:05 EST

Laddied,

If you are in Vilcabamba you must know "Venado del Sol", a guy named Curtis. Ribs to die for and a decent beer, both available on the weekends. Have you ask him? He has been in Ecuador a couple of decades. I miss the ribs and the view.

I'm not a big beer fan myself, but I and my girlfriend have gone to Bandidos because my son likes the place. I do want to put a plug in for their home-made chocolate chip cookies, though, which are biggest and best in UIO, imo...

Hi Laddied,
We opened a brewing supply company in Cuenca. We're just starting, but checkout what we've got so far under the products page on www.culturacerveceria.com I haven't uploaded the order form to the site yet but feel free to call me with any questions or special requests.
Cheers,
Shawn

Try the Zarza Brewing Co in Loja. Several choices of great craft beer and pub food. The owner's (Gregory a Texas expant and Elita his Ecuadorian wife) are very gracious and I am fairly sure if you contact them through their website they can help you find equipment and fixins. Zarza's is listed on trip advisor as an attraction. It certainly is an attraction for beer lovers but they also serve some great pub food.

Who is this ? Someone replies to a 10 month old post with thinly disguised profanity ? I hope rictic that he/she/it has the courage to say that to your face but I suspect it's just some impotent troll that climbed out from under a rock, looking for attention.
Where I am, there are no micro breweries to satisfy my craving for good draft ale but I consider it a small sacrifice and a large savings to my waistline and barriga !
