Does anyone know if there's a source for the coconut oil in Guayaquil, or even Salinas, or if there's someplace I could get massage oil. I'd prefer to use the coconut oil if possible though. Thanks in advance for any help.

And I would also like to find a source for the pint size jars. There are semi solid below 78 degrees; sort of like butter, but is great for cooking, and in your hands, liquifies almost instantly. Good for massages, hair, cooking; etc.

Oh, I love the benefits of coconut oil. I am looking as well. I saw a slab of some form of coconut at Supermaxi for 1.70 in Cuenca.. I even cooked steaks in it then put it on the veggies instead of butter... It is helpful in weight loss. It is the good fat your body loves.

suzamarie, there is a health food store on the south side Gran Colombia between Padre Aguire and Benigno Malo that sells Oro Blanco coconut oil in various sizes up to 2 liters. Kenny buys from this place because he says it is the cheapest in Cuenca. The store is modern looking inside and is closer to Padre Aguire than Benigno Malo. I think he said a 2 liter jar is $48.
There are other places, but Kenny says they don't have the largest size and they are more expensive. Kenny isn't much of a cook or baker, but when I have visited him I have used that coconut oil for both. He uses it for some sort of health ritual.

Ecuadorians use coconut for many things and I suspect coconut oil is available at the Mercados all over the country. Feria Libre, the largest in Cuenca is about 5 blocks away. I will go there tomorrow and check it out. My Spanish language teach suggests one of the larger pharmacies as a possible source.

"people that habitually consume coconut oil tend to have lower cholesterol levels, healthier livers and more efficient immune cells compared to those that seldom eat coconut oil."

I found this when I was doing a bit of research..
Just one tablespoon of coconut oil has more than 13 grams of fat. Four tablespoons will give you almost the entire U.S. recommended maximum daily intake of fat. And coconut oil has the highest saturated fat of any oil -- 10 times the saturated fat of olive oil, for example. So it may not be surprising that no clinical studies have actually documented a connection between coconut oil and weight loss [source: Mayo Clinic].

I have been using coconut oil for cooking for several years and it makes food really delicious like fries or fish and chips and in salad dressings. In Florida, where the ambient temperature is a little higher than Ecuador it is usually a liquid. I used to buy it from Amazon--2 54 oz containers for about $49.00 with free shipping. I believe the brand was Nutiva. It is food grade, the non food grade is about half that cost. If you ship through Club Correos, it would cost about $30. It's a little pricey but very healthy.

It sounds to me that I may have to ask friends who travel regularly to Cuenca to pick some up for me. Hard to believe that a city around 4 million doesn't have a supplier, but then it's also hard to believe that a county with so much coconut doesn't make more value added products with it.

Further research..
HEART DISEASE
High cholesterol levels can cause arteries to become blocked, which can lead to heart disease. In fact, according to the National Library of Medicine, the most common form of heart disease causes narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries and blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. This is the leading cause of heart attacks in people. Since coconut oil is high in saturated fats according to the University of Illinois Medical School, it is an unacceptable ingredient that should be avoided. However, if you must eat something containing coconut oil, use it in moderation because it can cause cholesterol. Also, try to avoid processed foods because these can contain high levels of coconut oil.

According to Kenny, casaverde is right about the newer research. I don't understand the biochemistry mumbo jumbo Kenny was ranting about on the phone just now, but he claims that coconut oil is very salubrious in many ways, including the fact that it stimulates the thyroid gland. He told me how that worked physiologically, but that was mostly lost on me. I'm going to go look up "salubrious" right now. Even after knowing this guy for over 60 years, I still don't understand a lot of what he says.

The article speaks to high cholesterol, heart disease, and allergic reactions. I would consider data obtained from these legitimate sources from 2010 current. I'm not trying to rain on your parade. Just want to warn of the side effects of coconut oil. Just because it happens to be currently trendy doesn't mean it's healthy.

Dunmovn, God forgive me for getting sucked back into anything on this forum, but in this case, I just couldn't remain silent. Apparently, you are as ignorant as Bobby Weissman always tells me you are.
You posted this:
"If you are into research, then you should be aware of the fact that there is not one shred of anecdotal medical evidence that cholesterol in your food adds to cholesterol in your blood. It is all corelative evidence which proves nothing."
I'm not foolish enough to begin knocking down your silly straw men because that is a never ending process. I knock one down, you will raise two new ones. But I can tell you this. Your assertion is utterly ridiculous and as a research physiologist I can assure you that it has been repeatedly shown that ingesting cholesterol in the diet can immediately be quantified as an increase in serum cholesterol. It is still arguable how this might affect cardiovascular health, but that doesn't change the fact of what I just wrote.
What is also clear is that you don't understand what anecdotal evidence is. You are not a scientist and I suggest you leave that to others.
Bobby, I will slap you silly if you try to lure me into any more of this inanity.

Dun, you posted..
"If you are into research, then you should be aware of the fact that there is not one shred of anecdotal medical evidence that cholesterol in your food adds to cholesterol in your blood. It is all corelative evidence which proves nothing."
Did you really just say that? Ummm... So... It makes no difference what you eat because you don't absorb anything from the food you consume? So a high fat diet doesn't mean you gain body fat? So... Smoking doesn't cause cancer? So... You don't feel the effects of six rum and cokes? So... Food heavily contaminated with, say, mercury shouldn't have any effect on your body?
So the entire medical profession has it wrong all this time? It doesn't matter what you eat because Dunmovin, who lives one block from the immigration office, says whatever you ingest somehow won't enter your bloodstream..
I'm curious where you graduated from medical school and how your opinion supersedes all medical knowledge attained through the ages..?
You better stick with your electrical expertise...

Nick, I will respond to you on this issue because it's a neutral subject matter (like Switzerland). I read it and I'm in agreement that it specifies virgin coconut oil. I never said there are not positive, or potentially positive, benefits from coconut oil. Just that it is may not be as healthy as a lot of people believe. And, although the article you cite was written recently, the references cites (below) are considerably older..

Oh yeah, we have read that story. Its pretty amazing. There are several foods that once were tainted as bad fats and now the current medical community say they are beneficial. All I know is that when I was younger...all of us, we ate what tasted good. Now they have all the low fat and no sugar etc and everyone gets unhealthy and fat. Natural fats can be digested and used by the body properly opposed to foods that are altered. The human body was doing just fine before weird science got involved. I went back to whole fats in dairy and switched to coconut oil to be healthy. Its working.

Great article. I also did some research on this a few years ago. Dr. Mary Newport's 58 year old husband of 36 years began to exhibit early signs of dementia and depression. Testing confirmed his diagnosis. After extensive research for the best possible treatment, she came across a drug called Ketasyn. The active ingredient was MCT medium chain triglycerides that the liver converts to ketones. The brain only has two sources of energy, glucose and ketones. Alzheimer patients have large areas of the brain resistant to glucose. Ketones also increase blood flow. Coconut oil is 60% MCT. She initially gave her husband two tablespoons in his oatmeal, and testing 4.5 hours later showed an improvement in his cognitive ability. She subsequently increased his daily dose to 4 tablespoons per day, by also mixing it in her salad dressings, cooking with it, substituting if for butter in pastas, etc. Her husband Steve's depression lifted, his gait improved, and he was again able to engage in conversations. Although his brain remains shrunken, his quality of life improved substantially. I shared this info with my friend while I was in the States this past summer. He had to put his 63 year old wife in a nursing home. After 3 months of coconut oil added to her food, she was able to come home and be left alone with an aid. Her depression lifted, and she also was able to converse again! I should note that positive results are also being seen in patients with other degenerative neurologic diseases such as ALS. Parkinson's and Huntington's. Infants deprived of oxygen and adults that have suffered a heartache with subsequent loss of oxygen to the brain, are also responding well to coconut oil. Because the liver does not store it as fat like other oils, but rather converts it to ketones, it does not raise cholesterol. In fact, it has shown to improve the ratio of cholesterol to HDL. That said, we had to bring the oil with us, and if anyone in Cuenca knows of a good source, I would love to have that information.

Breather, two points:
1. Anecdotal evidence such as you cite is worthless.
2. If you had bothered to read the thread, you would have seen the following:
"suzamarie, there is a health food store on the south side Gran Colombia between Padre Aguire and Benigno Malo that sells Oro Blanco coconut oil in various sizes up to 2 liters. Kenny buys from this place because he says it is the cheapest in Cuenca. The store is modern looking inside and is closer to Padre Aguire than Benigno Malo. I think he said a 2 liter jar is $48.

Please keep praying. It is appreciated.

The first study to debunk the myth about cholesterol was almost 35 years ago at Harvard Medical School They followed 25,000 nurses for over 5 years and the results were that a high cholesterol diet did not add to blood cholestrol. There have been several others since, the most recent at Stanford. The attached link might be of some interest to those with an open mind.

Dun, I reviewed you source. One third (30%) of the test group had elevated cholesterol from an increase of eggs in their diet (or did you read that part?). If you will keep an open mind and read this I formation below, from the Mayo Clinic no less, you might learn something new about cholesterol.
Risk factors By Mayo Clinic staff You're more likely to have high cholesterol that can lead to heart disease if you have any of these risk factors:
Smoking. Cigarette smoking damages the walls of your blood vessels, making them likely to accumulate fatty deposits. Smoking may also lower your level of HDL, or "good," cholesterol. Obesity. Having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater puts you at risk of high cholesterol.
Poor diet. Foods that are high in cholesterol, such as red meat and full-fat dairy products, will increase your total cholesterol. Eating saturated fat, found in animal products, and trans fats, found in some commercially baked cookies and crackers, also can raise your cholesterol level.
Lack of exercise. Exercise helps boost your body's HDL "good" cholesterol while lowering your LDL "bad" cholesterol. Not getting enough exercise puts you at risk of high cholesterol.
High blood pressure. Increased pressure on your artery walls damages your arteries, which can speed the accumulation of fatty deposits. Diabetes. High blood sugar contributes to higher LDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol. High blood sugar also damages the lining of your arteries. Family history of heart disease. If a parent or sibling developed heart disease before age 55, high cholesterol levels place you at a greater than average risk of developing heart disease.
I know you're not inclined to fess up when disproved, but here is another good opportunity..

When my husband and I were caring for Kenny after his knee surgery and I was cooking for him, he never mentioned the coconut oil. I usually cooked with olive oil. He always said what a great cook you were!
Thank you for your recent, kind email, and please know we are continuing to do everything we can to get the word out. Our friends and family are continuing to remember you in prayer.
You must not be feeling well which is certainly understandable with your medical condition. I say that because you don't seem yourself today. The first part of your post mimics the same thing Kenny says over and over! You two certainly have been close friends for a long, long time.

Hi Breather,
Yes, Kenny and I go back to when he was in kindergarten with my younger sister. We've been close ever since. Sometimes I talk to him on the phone 5 or six times a day.
I think this coconut oil thing is relatively new with Kenny. He had a neighbor right across the terrace out his kitchen sliding door that is a retired Ob/Gyn that was really into natural remedies. I don't know how Kenny uses the coconut oil, but I think it is for more than cooking. Before his football games tomorrow, I'll call him and see just what he does with it.
Yes, I absolutely love to cook and the 3 times I have visited Kenny, I always do all the cooking. You know him. He'll get a date and designate me as his personal chef. I love doing it.
He has now had 3 surgeries on his left knee and it is he that is truly grumpy these days. He was in a full leg cast for 6 weeks and he virtually didn't go out of the apartment except for 3 doctors appointments.
I'll send you a PM with more info.

Dun, there is a line in one of my favorite books, which was later turned into a movie, Lonsome Dove where Woodrow Call says to Agustus McCray.. "You'd argue with a post."
It is futile to prove you wrong because you don't have the ability/personality to accept being wrong.
It's unfortunate because that trait seems to alienate you from others. I have nothing to prove to you and I'm done trying.
