For those of you who can't pass the criminal background check, one solution is to go to Puerto RIco, get an ID/driver's license (which takes 5 mins), go to a local police station, and get a Certificate of Good Conduct (the official name is Certificado de No Antecedentes Penales). It basically says you've never been arrested in Puerto Rico. The certificate has the same format as its Ecuadorian counterpart, the embassy will be none the wiser, and best of all, it's already in Spanish so you won't need to have it translated.

Wow...are you serious? Perhaps I have read this info wrong....but it seems you are telling criminals to circumvent the law here in Ecuador to be able to be allowed in the country.....so one might have to ask...is this how YOU did it?
The second part of this question would be....why?

Why would you want people that could not pass a criminal backgroud check to be allowed to live here?

If I have interpreted any of this wrong please clarify for me and I will apologize for asking the obvious questions.

I wholly agree. Shady dealings will never work in the long run. As the saying goes, "the truth will find you out". And it always does. Personally, people who use these tactics are not the ones I would choose to be acquainted with.

OOPSIE...

Well guess that won't be a loophole anymore because...you do know we have lurkers here from our good friends in Immigration here in Ecuador.

Oh, you didn't know that?

And you were not aware that your ISP is pretty much available for them to backtrack just who and where you are?

And...that is why it will be standard operating procedure for all the Immigration offices, not just Cuenca, to require FBI checks sooner rather than later for all USA citizens -- because we do have these sorts of charming individuals muddying up the procedure.

Thank you for doing your best to keep the Immigration Office one step ahead of those nefarious and shady individuals who would circumvent the standard procedures and bring their criminal intent to our beloved adopted country.

Have a great day... buh-bye!

Susan,

I have for so long operated on the assumption that any electronic communications was compromised (ie not secret) that I am always amazed when people do this sort of thing.

Is this related to the baby peek-a-boo revelation? That others can see me even though I can't see them?

In this case, others (immigration) can see my suggestion...even though I am directing it at somebody else (in a public forum). This is very basic perception/awareness.

Not quite telling a High-Jack joke in the terminal of an airport...but similar.

Or me saying....make the gringos show ALL their divorce decrees!! you know they often have more than one.... but I would be crazy to wise up immigration to that. I'll just keep mum.

First of all...great info and dialogue...much appreciated!

That said...with all due RESPECT... I must state the mindset of MANY (esp.Amerikans) is mind boggling towards "felons". First of all... Amerika has the LARGEST prison population on earth holding 25% of ALL inmates on earth. It is a FOR PROFIT business...IE Human Warehousing. It takes NOTHING these days to get a felony. DO NOT confuse a felony with a SOCIOPATH/PSYCHOPATH/DEVIANT/SEXUAL PREDATOR (as even in prison they must be kept seperate from the general population as the other "felons" will kill them!)... which, btw, is less than a couple of percent of all inmates and they usually don't get out. MANY (and I mean a LOT!) people in the USSA are in prison falsely (google Timothy Masters)...as I WAS! Why...whether the crime was committed or not is there this permanent label of "felon"? Did not the person pay their so-called "debt" to society ( a sick and hypocritical society at that), and is this not a valid reason that MANY expat in the first place?? Why in Amerika are asshats like Michael Vick, Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan given extreme leniency and FORGIVENESS but the average Joe isn't? Check your premise before you take the moral high ground.

That said... I totally agree... WHY try and abrogate the law by BREAKING it? I never advocate "shady" dealings...it's not right. But I also don't judge someone that has to "work the system" if that's the ONLY way to get to their "non-criminal" goal...IE expating to get a better life.

Having a felony should not be the proverbial Scarlet Letter... especially if you've changed your ways. I DO NOT defend bad behavior in ANY way....I'm just trying to get people that think WRONGLY due to a media induced mind set...that things are not as they always appear. For those of a judeo/christian paradigm...I remind you that Moses was a stone cold killer... as was David... and yet you admire them... perhaps rightly so. Treat others as you would want to be treated...and avoid judging (didn't JC say that?)... and be a good human..

Damn near every Amerikan politician is a crook and should be in jail for treason... and yet everyone want to shake their hand and have their picture taken with them... WTF? THINK!

Actually....

...oh why do I even bother...

Need I repeat that not all felonies are viewed equally in regards to visaapplications?

And there is a difference between federal and state...

And for the record that term "Judeo/Christian" is an oxymoron...it pretty much means, well, just Christian. Please, leave us Jews out of your so-called paradigm. Moishe v' Dovid ...and the rest are interpretted far differently in our philosphy then in your gospel...so let's not go there shall we?

One thing stands clear -- if a pperson is a felon and then choses to contine to perpetuate the characteristics of a felon by taking a questionable turn to attempt to bypass regular procedures in an effort to rig the system to allow what would and should be disallowed against them, they are not rehabilitated. Of that there is no question.

...I agree...why do you bother?
I tell ya what... if you guys are indicative of the expat community in Ecuador... well then "felons" are the least of my worries. I speak with respect and ask honest questions...and get vitriol? What's up with that? Are you really that miserable with your life...maybe Ecuador is right for YOU, cuz it puts you in a foul mood.??

and let me guess...you're one of those grammar Nazi people that corrects people when they mistype their/they're or your/you're right?

How presumptive... I never revealed my religion...so back off. You ignored ENTIRELY the substance of the comment, and instead nit picked over minutiae? Seriously?

You are obviously an chat forum prima-donna (likely with a small cult following)...

And...apparently you are WRONG...not all felonies are viewed equally. Do you always give opinionated wrong advice to good hearted honest seekers? Another forum member was kind enough to give me USEFUL knowledge and links...instead of being a hubris filled, self-absorbed, arrogant ASSHAT.

and you're right...one thing does stand clear...but it's not what you said. It's something much more obvious.

Didn't your mother ever teach you if you don't have something nice to say to shut the f*ck up?

...well she should have.

Not a real friendly bunch eh?

WHY DO I EVEN BOTHER? Cuz I don't tolerate asshats that's why

I tell people this because sometimes we have stuff in our past that should remain in our past. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, Besides, we all know how the US criminal justice system operates. You can have an arrest for selling tshirts in the street without a license, and it can prevent you from ever finding a job or getting a visa for a foreign country. For those of us who want to escape the imperialist American pigs, I'm showing you a way out. Alot of the BS laws that're illegal in the United Police States of America is standard operating procedure here in the free world.

I agree 100%. If prison wasn't meant to be a payment of debt to society, then what's the point of locking people up? Once you are released from prison, your debt to society is paid in full. What you did before does not matter, and it especially should not matter in a foreign country. It doubly especially should not matter if said conviction took place in the Great Satan USA. The US can keep it's prison industrial complex and shove it! I renounced my US citizenship last year. I am now 100 percent Ecuadorian. I have a wife and daughter who are Ecuadorian. I don't care who is reading this. They couldn't deport me if they tried.

Anti-American doesn't go over well in Ecuador. A great many Ecuadoreans would love the chance to go the US. People trying to flee a government oppression will not find any relief in Ecuador unless you set up a little tent in the middle of the jungle and even then the local tribes might have something to say.

Lovely language there from both our new posters -- and that wins such high marks for respect and admiration from our members here (yes that was sarcasm)

Now might I ask what part of:

"not all felonies are viewed equally in regards to visaapplications" you misunderstood...

This was a matter well discussed the last time a convicted felon attempted to pull a similar scam -- trying to convince us that his drug trafficking was no big deal and his time spent in a federal penitentiary was nothing much.

There are felonies that the visa office will look past -- thos that are designated state and those that less to do with drugs, trafficking narcotics and money laudering -- in other words those that are involved or could be involved with drug cartels in any way.

So whoever assisted you was repeating the efforts of those who analyzed this matter previously ad nauseum -- it is the way of forums to do just that.

As for #1ingles...how ironic he claims that old Vegas line -- as in fact this IS the oringinal Vegas... so senor... yes it matters what you did and no -- you won't be making your "new start" here. That's life -- it is not the movies, no you don;t always get a second start, and you defintiely don;t get the opportunity to bring your shady nature to try your scamming here. We have enough to deal with what is already here we don't need more and Ecuador is learning to protect herself daily from foiks like you trying to perpetuate more of the same.

Last -- have no worries Mando and number1english that you are about to be banned ... you offer way too much eentertainment for that to occur -- even with thee extra work your posting is going to create to the moderation cue. It's still cloudy on the coast and my dog is recovering from surgery -- I needed a diversion...so please.... amuse me... but for goodness sake, you might consider something more appropriate than referring to a Jewish person as a Nazi, that is simply ... de trop, even my mother would agree.

Yes, moderator on the coast, the use of invectives (insults) requires a little skill. My favorite is "communist Nazi". Simply taking two insults and joining them to make something twice as nasty.

No, because if you know the history you'd know that no two groups hated each other more and fought each other more viciously in Germany in the 20's than the National Socialists and the Communists.

But polarization doesn't allow for a multi polar reality, you are either with me or against me.

Debate in the USA has been reduced to medicine ball with insults being tossed. One of many symptoms of decline.

Oh ya!?, ya! (a summary)

remember when people would say...."Well, if you don't like it here why don't you leave the country!!"

Some things I like, some I don't....50/50. So I will take their advise and leave when it gets cold.

PS. what are my chances of getting horse radish root thu customs? zero? I have kale seed, I hope that's ok.

Yes it is -- but it is a bit scary -- but it becomes a clearinghouse of sorts as well.

And in that way it assists the various lurking authorities who can in turn do as they need to to tap into protecting us from individuals like this from gaining entrance to the country.

Anyone who imagines the Internet is or has ever been an environment for privacy misinterprets its effect -- those of us involved from the start recall the very essence of our first experiences were on public bulletin boards --BBS.

This person has now left a trail of breadcrumbs to his identity a mile wide -- and a rather obvious history to demonstrate why he would be most unwelcome in any ciclized social area.

OH,

Interesting piece in the NYT magazine this past Sunday on the job of moderating forums and keeping robot posts from comment areas. They address the problem of contamination that must be fought constantly. This area is another of the series of disappointments the culture has had with technical inventions that were to bring positive social revolution....

TV was one. Didn't happen. Internet has been more positive overall. But long ago when people just speculated they imagined that when citizens could express themselves and discuss issues directly then peace and understanding would prevail. That ain't gonna happen either.

In this NYT magazine article someone is quoted as saying, humans will repeatedly seek technical solutions to human problems. Social problems. Unhappy citizens who don't know exactly why they are unhappy or enjoy wallowing in their unhappiness might just be a fixed percentage demographically, some natural distribution. A constant immune to change.

Huxley's novel, "Brave New World" suggested a future solution to this problem. Live long enough and it's all Science Fiction.

a woolly caterpillar crossed my path this morning. The temperature was mid 40's F.

I see everyone has their own personal theories about me. To answer all your delightful questions, no, I don't have any drug crimes in my history. No, I did not go to Puerto Rico and get a visa that way. Yes, I did help several good guys who otherwise wouldn't have been able to come here. Everyone deserves a second chance. Especially when they're from the United Police States of Amerikkka, where it is a crime to be poor. Yes, I hate that miserable country because there I'm just some low-class spic from Queens. What does being bilingual get you there? The right to wash dishes? Here I go to an honest job and receive an honest pay. No one belittles me because of my skin color, there is no stop and frisk, no racial profiling. It's not a crime for me to have my weekend hustle selling t-shirts outside the stadium. No cops will roll up to me with guns drawn because I'm trying to feed myself. The US can kiss my Ecuadorian ass. I even told them so when I went to the US embassy in Bogotá and cancelled my passport and social security number. If I never see the United States again, it will be too soon. Having said that, I'm sure people become expats because they are dissatisfied with the state of their lives in wherever they happen to be from. So don't judge me. I'm not here on vacation. I'm just another cat from Quito tryin to survive.
