Cell Phone Recommendations for 1-Week Stay

I will be visiting Cuenca for 1-week in November. I'm not cell phone savvy from an international perspective so I'm coming to the experts on this forum. I have a cell phone that will work in Ecuador according to my provider (AT&T) so should I (1) add the international plan for a month as AT&T suggests or (2) buy a local phone to use while I'm there or (3) do something else? Thanks in advance for the advice!

You can use your ATT phone for international calls at a cost of about $3.50 per minute. I would purchase a local phone and buy some minutes for $.15 a minute.

It depends on what kind of phone you currently have, and how much you think you may use a phone in one week. If you plan on making a lot of calls that week, the AT&T International plan can end up costing you an arm and leg.

If you happen to have a phone with dual SIM cards (most of the phones you get from AT&T do not have this feature, but you could have one), you can simply buy an Ecuadorian SIM card from a local cell phone kiosk or store for maybe $5,Slip it in the phone, then buy $15 worth of minutes and you're good to go.

If you do not have a phone with dual SIM cards, and you are going to make a lot of calls, just buy a cheap dumb phone in Ecuador for around $40-45 and buy yourself some minutes and have fun!

We were in Ecuador in March and I have a 3G (old) iphone. Before we left the U.S., I had the phone unlocked and then went to the Paseo (Shopping Center) and bought a SIM card for my phone. Go to a pharmacy and buy your minutes. Upon return to the U.S., just replace your SIM Card. Be careful when you unlock your phone, you can lose all of your contacts.

You might want to buy a Magic Jack Plus phone & set itup in the States before you go. Calls back home will be free & you can take it wherever you go. Local calls: get a cheap phone in Ec. That's what I did.

Most of the phone stores like CLARO have a very inexpesnive model around 35 or 40 dollars that comes with about $3 of minutes already -- it is worth it to not have to worry about finding an unlocked phone in the USA.

Often here at the Ocean Hideaway we have repurchased the phones from folks heading back to the states and we will continue to "rent" them out to our guests with our number and the number of our drivers and our Doctor so they can head to Salinas and around the coast with a feeling of security and we can contact them too.

Long Distance back to the States -- SKYPe works great if you have a computer or an iPad ...otherwise call from a telephone cabina for a low cost alternative.
