I am flying into the new Quito airport from Manta on November 14th and want to go from there to Otavalo. Does anyone know if a bus goes from the airport or can I catch the bus from Quito somewhere along it's route to Otavalo? Sure rather do that than go into Quito and then back out to Otavalo.

No bus straight from airport. Just from the bus terminal just make sure you go to the correct terminal. Quitumbe terminal. Take either local bus or taxi from airport.

Is quitumbe near the airport or back in Quito? I keep trying to find the Quito airport on maps but guess it is too new. Thanks for the information.

Ahhh, I figured it out. It is a shame I cannot go somewhere via taxi to board the bus to Otavalo enroute and avoid the ride all the way to the south side of Quito and then back to the north to Otavalo.

No, you don't go to the Quitumbe bus station to go to Otavalo. It's the Ofelia bus station in the north of Quito in Carcelen. However, there is a way to go to Otavalo from the airport. Take the green bus from the airport Pifo. In Pifo take a green bus that says El Quinche. In El Quinche you can catch a bus to Otavalo. That way would be way faster than going into Quito. However, if it's late at night this may not work because the buses won't run after 9pm (unless you go to the bus station).

I fail to see the attraction in Otavalo, I was there 2 years ago and it has become a tourist trap. If you are going for the leather goods, don't waste your time. The best leather goods in Ecuador are made in Cuenca and outside of Ambato.

Excellent, this is exactly what I was looking for. My flight into Quito gets in at 8:25 am, so that leaves me plenty of time to get lost and back on track once or twice. Thanks, I will post a follow up on how the trip goes.

We do not all like the same stuff. Everyone apparently like Cuenca, I don't. Taste differ. Maybe they like Otavalo maybe they don't. They will not know unless they tried it for themselfs.

Thanks for all the input. I am currently in Cuenca, going to Manta next, then Otavalo, and to Quito trying to see which area we would like to focus on for a potential retirement spot. Assuming we find one (or two) we really like it will let us make plans for a February return exploration in more depth. I agree with mr bumblebee, don't know until you have tried it.

Otavalo has an excellent market on Saturdays, geesh. And some pretty amazing leather goods in the leather town of Cotacachi.

Much of the leather goods sold in Cotacachi or Otavalo are made in Azuay province, Cuenca.

I'm surprised to hear this. Flying into Quito to visit Cotacachi and Otavalo specifically for their markets but will spend the majority of my time in Cuenca. Now I hear that the leather goods come from Cuenca??? That changes everything...
Thanks...

Although I'm annoyed at all the rancor tossed casadecuenca's way, I gotta say to the great AKA, Malcolm, you don't know squat about the North so STFU!
The Indigenous markets up here, the craftsmanship in wood, textiles and leather can't be beat.
The leather goods in Cotacachi are made in Imbabura province (Cotacachi, Ibarra, Otavalo) with allowance for free trade within the country.
Stick to what you don't know about Cuenca. You're there so people may fall for your hallucinations. Leave the rest of the country alone.

TheresaD - unfortunately you are a newbie and natural prey for the likes of casadecuenca.- an individual who has for over two years masqueraded under a number of usernames - trying to stay ahead of his past, while at the same time becoming the most OUTspoken individual on the forum, spewing whatever ideatic rivulets of nonsense he can formulate. he is often wrong, and his manner of appearing as the world authority leads newbies like yourself to perceive that there is credibility behind these seemingly benign statements. there is no credibility and you would be wise to delete his posts, as i do, and rely on the posts of others. the issue that he is still allowed to post is another topic.

TheresaD, I have had a home in Cotacachi for over 4 years I can assure you that the leather goods are made there and the town of Otavalo has the largest and most well known Saturday market in Ecuador. Casa has a habit of putting stuff out there he knows nothing about
