ElComercio.com) El Comercio is reporting that IESS adopted a rule eliminating voluntary membership in the country. According to a new resolution, only Ecuadorians living abroad can apply for voluntary affiliation. This rule went into effect last Monday. Those who are already voluntary members will be moved to a different category called "afiliación obligatoria sin relación de dependencia". There are currently 50,000 voluntary members. The decision by the IESS board last December to remove the age limit, medical examinations and other restrictions to facilitate voluntary membership, generated concern about the economic impact on the social security system.
