A metal detector! Great idea. I have never seen one used in Ecuador in the three years I've been there, off and on.

I don't think I every saw one for sale either. And, I never heard of any law about using one.

Of course there is a law that any art work, or patrimonial item (token of national identity?) can not be exported without a permit. An artist friend needed paperwork on his own paintings when sending them to a show in San Francisco.

Any Inca gold you found would be property of the state. Imagine going thru exit customs at Quito and trying to explain a gold headdress. Or even old Spanish armor. A tin can, they might let you keep.

We have lots of folks who try metal detectors here on the coast... problemis wehavealot of "heavy" sand. Black sand that is iron basically and makes it difficult to spot actual metals.

...so most give up...

But if you were going to go look, the area around Acopulco Beach and then down to Chanduy where the wreck discovered by Capt Dillon that you can see parts of at the Restaurant/Museum/Hostal Farillon Dilllon in Ballenita would definitely be where to go.
