our trip to Cuenca

the husband and I just returned from a week in Cuenca. I didn't post a request to meet expats because we wanted to get a feel for the area from our own experience, and I wanted to know how it felt to be without a ready made support group. We are now even more interested in coming for a longer stay. We found the people warm and gracious, the climate perfect for our needs and the culture intriguing. It is impossible to get the idea of what it is to live in a place when you are on vacation, when you don't have your own home, routine and plans for weeks instead of day.

We will return next year to stay for at least 6 months. Then, we will likely want to reach out to the expat community to learn from your experience. Before anyone asks, no, we are not fluent in Spanish but I am studying every day and husband being Latino knows enough to get by but is also working on improvement.

At the risk of opening a can of worms (euew - don't care for them) there was a story here a couple of weeks ago about a couple who went through extra means to bring their French Bulldog to Cuenca. It was posted by someone that many of you seem to have some issues with. I don't want to get into the motives of that person. That is his problem, not mine. But we met that couple. They are just wonderful people. Intelligent, warm and charming. They have two dogs, the French and an American Staffordshire Bull. The dogs are friendly and happy. I didn't ask if/why they would have paid at customs, that is none of my business. They are Canadian, although one is native Ecuadorian. We really hope to maintain a relationship with them until we get back. I am pleased to think of them as friends.

We are not escaping, although we are tired of the politics here. We are not looking for a cheap place to live, although we are approaching retirement with less than we anticipated. We are looking for a community that will give us new experiences, some challenges and a broader perspective on what this world is outside of the US. We hope we will find some of that in Ecuador.
Buenas Nochas.
