There has probably been a thread on this topic before here but I cannot find it. We are getting ready to apply for social security this year while living here in Ecuador and just wanted to talk to anyone that has already done this and maybe have a few pointers.

A few things: 1) You can not access the SS site from out-of-country. You have to go thru Costa Rica for some things. Be careful about doing that, I had some trouble there.

No, I am in Quito. You can indeed apply for Social Security over the internet.

Contact the Federal benefits Unit (FBU) in Quito at the US Embassy at: [email protected]
I have found they reply very quickly and are quite helpful.

It's the 16th of Jan 2015 @ 8:22am. I just got through accessing the social security site and got the information I needed. I am presently living in Guayaquil and have been able to get into the ss site many times over the past few years.

I live in Manta, Ecuador and was able to access the Social Security website with no problem. The only problem I had was that my password had expired. I have an Ecuadorian IP address.

Yes, It does not matter where you live in Ecuador, you can access the SS in U.S. I did that around 5 O'clock this morning BUT IF YOU ARE NOT COMPUTER SAVY HERE IT IS THIS YEAR THE SS IS ASKING YOU TO RENEW YOUR SOCIAL S... PASSWORD OR ELSE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO LOG IN. IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCESS THE SS THEN YOU MUST CREATE AN ACOUNT BEFORE YOU CAN ACCESS.... DO I NEED TO SAY MORE OR IS THIS CLEAR ENOUGH? Sorry, just not to much time....

Thank you for all your responses. I really was trying to find out if anyone had applied for, and started receiving ss benefits in the past year, from out of the country. There are some questions on the application that I am not quite sure how to answer and the consequences of some answers. I just like to be prepared as much as possible for consequences of honesty these days.

@lindae, The staff at the Federal Benefits unit (FBU) at the US Embassy in Quito will be able to help you with the application. I found them to be very detailed in their help and very fast.
