Why are you moving? Expectations?

I have been interested in some of the articles posted recently. Oh, yes, we are in our 4th year in Cotacachi, Ecuador. Many questions and comments reflect the need for Gringo interaction and Gringo needs. So, just why are you considering a move to Ecuador?
It is most important to examine why you are moving AND your expectations. Climate, economy, medical care, food, better life? After considering all of these, please remember, you are about to become part of a completely different culture. AND, it is THEIR culture. You and I are GUESTS of this culture. What a beautiful experience these past years have been.

You can absolutely move here with no expectations, planning to live here inexpensively, and have only Gringos for friends, watch Direct TV, eat at Gringo restaurants, etc.

No matter the reason for a move, expectations, considered or not, will need always to be balanced with the sweet people here and their culture . This beautiful place is, for sure, not the United States, just in another location.

Many people, if not most, and more recently it seems move here for the wrong reasons.

They fear American "socialism" yet move to a socialist country to enjoy the benefits of socialism and are happy to do so without paying any taxes.

Reminds me of when I lived in Sedona, Arizona ( long before it got "discovered" ) and folks started moving in from California and Michigan to escape the various social, economic perils and pollution of their respective states.
The first thing they wanted to do was change Paradise to fit exactly what they were running away from !

I know many who ran here to escape their pasts... only to find their pasts came right along with them:
wife beaters, disability fraudsters, child support jumpers, anti Semitic skinheads --- that would all be one person right there actually --- but pretty much all sorts of nasty things to run from only to find wherever they go ...there they are (thanks Buckaroo Bonzai...)

Now let's face it, you don't make it through life without failures and mistakes and I personally have a few doozies... but you don't run from them, you are supposed to learn and grow and mature from your errors and move on to live a full and authentic life.

Regrettably, most of the people who are running away to Ecuador haven't and they bring a lot more baggage then can be packed in a container. They are simply running away from home and responsibilities and trying hard to cover up the poop under the stair case before anyone finds out and smells it

But we live in the age of the internet...and googling and research really brings up all sorts of stuff about people they thought they hid ...so very well.

They didn't, they haven't changed, and eventually the truth comes out in great splattering explosions ...and it is rarely pretty...

We have seen it here too many times... Often I have told the person -- don;t come -- they do -- it never goes well... really I can supply you with examples if you really must see. But it will ruin your appetite and seriously rock you respect for certain professions.

All I will say is come to Ecuador because you are in love with Ecuador...

Do not run to Ecuador because it is cheap, you can live well here on little money, you are escaping for the USA, you are running from the politics etc. Please don't runaway to Ecuador...

Consider ...all those things you are running from? We are already here! That should scare you enough to keep you far away :)
