Traveling to Ecuador Pregnant need Hospital Recommendations

I am traveling to Manta when I am 7 months pregnant and although I have gotten permission from my doctor as well as gotten all the necessary immunizations I want to make sure that if something should happen and I go into labor early I know what hospital to go to. I have done some research online and have consulted my health insurance company however they were unable to suggest any hospitals with good NICU departments. Can anyone suggest a hospital that has a good NICU department in Manta or surrounding areas?

Is there a reason you want to have this child in Ecuador and a need to be in Ecuador during your third trimester?

If not -- wait ...and come visit after you give birth. You will be working with a known element then... Or you may find you don;t need to be flying with a baby, or peri-natal.

We don;t have the level of neo natal care you would expect to find at most hospitals in the USA. Most births are home births here unless there are complications.

This is not the USA.

Thank you for your feedback however this does not answer my question regarding suggested hospitals in the area we are staying.

Thank you

Actually it did answer your question, it simply did not give you an answer you wanted to read.

Coming to a foreign country where you do not speak the language and do not know the culture when you are in your final trimester is not a responsible decision.

There are few neo natal hospital facilities in the entire country. Manabi province is one of the poorer provinces and perhaps there is a hospital in Manta but it will not be up to standards you would require in the case of an early birth.

The outcome for both you and your baby would be poor.

Most babies in Ecuador are birthed at home by the local midwife assisted by the grandmother and the sisters and aunts.

You are not coming to Ecuador to live in a community with a mid wife in whom you have confidence -- perhaps vsiting Manabi province is not a good choice for you at this time.

Of course you could also do more intesive research for Manabi hospitals and go on facebook and look for the Beach Mamas Ecuador group.

You may find something that those already living here for years do not know.

Most of those moms on the FB group who live in Salinas and in the area of Montanita and Olon, choosing to live in the Santa Elena Province which does have a NeoNatal hospital and facilities and is close enough to Guyayaquil to provide emergency services.

Of course -- I know nothing about you, your family, your experiences, your ability or lack of speaking the language, your choice to come to Ecuador, your ability to do internet research, or your reasons, or your entire history so it is naturally feasible that I am completely wrong and you are entitled to absolute dispensation and compensation for all things for your age, your world in which you live, and your personal sphere of influence.

I still think...you should stay home until the baby is born... but that's just me.

... and what could I possible know?

Susan
