Hello, I'm thinking about moving to Ecuador 6 months a year. I'm an early retired from Canada (55 years old), worked in Saudi Arabia and now living in Bahrain. I would go back to Quebec for the summer months May-October) and stay in Ecuador. I would like to stay close to the beach but not necessary on the beach. Is it easy to find an apartment fully furnish for 6 months a year. I would be looking at 2 bedrooms If i like the area I would be back in the same area every year. I presently learning basic Spanish and should be able to speak a little when I will get there. I intend to do some voluntary work and make my knowledge of computer available to everyone that need it. My motto is Do good and good will come to you !!!! Any info would be most welcome Regards, Rick

RickBaron, Great plan! Have you ever been to Ecuador? What area are you considering? The coastal areas are very diverse. Why Ecuador?

Diverse! I'll say they're diverse.
Over 2,200 km of shoreline (Wikipedia).
Surf-party towns, high-rise towers towns, touristy honky-tonk towns, quaint fishing villages, and an industrial center (Manta, the Baltimore of Ecuador).
Multiple micro-climates up and down the long Pacific coastline.

Hello, Thanks for your quick answer. Never been to Ecuador but read a lot about it, originally my plan was Honduras but after a little research Ecuador seem a little more what I'm looking for. I also looked at other countries in the area, Panama and Argentina and that is why I'm not interested in buying a property, maybe some day but for now 6 months a year is quite ok for me just in case Ecuador is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a little fishing, plenty of sun and some sightseeing. The possibility to have my marine biologist friends come for a visit to see the whales. is also a good reason. I also play golf but this is really not a must. I do not know what area exactly I would prefer but the area of Manta and Salinas seem to be nice. I'm open to check around before I select a place to stay. Thanks for the help Regards, Rick

Be sure to check the type of visa you will need.
For 6 months, you will be applying for a non resident tourist visa back in the USA prior to coming to Ecuador. And you need to be sure your passport is current as well.

Hello, Thank you for your information. I will be leaving Canada so I presume this information is still accurate for Canada. I just renew my passport for a 10 years, so I should be ok. Thanks again Regards, Richard

That's living -- summer in Canada, then summer on the EC coast in the same year!
December through May is often the summer season on the EC coast, so you may be paying high-season prices for most of your stay.
But there's a lot of choice of communities on the 900-plus-miles coast, so your chances are good to find monthly lodging for a reasonable rent.
Many Expats love Bahía de Caráquez, so consider that city as well if you can.

Hi, We currently live on the coast near Bahia de Caraquez. We are residents, and have been coming and going for the past 4 years now. We chose this area after much research, including inches of rain per year at various locations, and temperatures, altitude etc. Our personal preferences led us here. In general, from Bahia to the North, it is moister, with higher rainfall levels in the Esmeraldas province, and from Bahia to the South it is drier. Salinas is a city with many condos, and is where many folks from Guayaquil go to vacation. It is drier there, and is quite warm. We have been told that it is hot about 50% of the year and then gets quite cool the other 50%. We have not been there in all seasons to verify. From Manta south there are shortages of water, and need to be careful if purchasing a property. Many are having to truck in the water. There are rentals to be had for 6 months, varying rates and quality. Furnished rentals are a bit higher cost, and the furnishings are usually fairly sparse. We are actually working with some local families here to set up more "vacation" or short term rentals and also plan to arrange for a few long term ones as well. Most of the long term ones, are not furnished, so there is a cost to furnish them. Manta is a nice city, a little big for us. Most of the "nice" area is concentrated in one section of the city, and is higher cost. The rest of the city is not as nice, and has some areas which we do not believe to be safe. From Bahia south it is drier, and going north become wetter. This year there are problems at many of the beaches North and South, with weather, and erosion. This around Bahia has not been affected. But Jama to the North, and San Clemente to the South have been. There is a Golf course in Manticristi, near Manta that is open to Public. Also, there is an urbanization project to the North (near Jama) and South (south of Bahia) that are putting in Golf Courses. The one to the North, is supposed to be open to the public also, but not sure when either of these will be finished. As far as the beaches, they are diverse, and we loved all of them. The first year here, we traveled as far north as Rio Verde, north of Esmeraldas, and South past Salinas, around the point to Guayaquil. We have not visited the Playas area, but have been told it is much "smaller" than Salinas but prime for growth, and is also a vacation area for residents of Guayaquil. Hope this information helps. PM us for more information, and check out the Bahia area when you are here. See you soon.
