I am looking for advice....my fiancé is from Ecuador and I am American... we are trying to figure out which process is easier....to get a fiancé visa and get married in the U.S. or to get married here in Ecuador before moving back to the U.S. I have a year left of school in North Carolina and I am just taking a year off to live here with my fiancé. Any tips?

My first tip is that y0u should understand that your fiance is just as much an "American" as you are!

For a marriage legally in Ecuador you, the non national have to be here in the country legally for, I believe 75 days prior.

Also all marriages must be performed as civil ceremonies before a Notario qualified to perform marriages.

And the marriage Must be immediately recorded as well as the status change on ones cedula.

You would record the marriage at the US Consulate.

Your wife however would need to live with youIn the USA for at least 5 years during the marriage, and it would need to be in existence, to be a beneficiary of any Social Security ...something probably not of concern to you as a young person, but of interest to older men marrying younger Ecuadorian spouses.

Also marriage does not immediately award change of immigrant status in either country.

I was going to say that. Somos Americanos, Soy Estado Unidense o gringo. And until Washington annexes Mexico and the frozen wastes to the north....we share "North American" (also not a nationality). with two other countries,

Language shapes culture and culture shapes perceived reality.

Oh, may the newly married couple have a long and full life of conjugal bliss. Verbs are not the only thing that can be conjugated, danke Gott.

You will have to be in Ecuador for 75 days to marry here. Need to get Civil marriage. You should marry in Ecuador. Then go to the US consulate. It will only take about 2 weeks to get a temporary 2 year visa for your wife. You can finish the visa process in the US. She can get a green card allowing her to work. She will need a criminal record clearance and a health check.
If you go for a fiancé, visa it can take 7 months.
As to SS if she lives with you for 5 years and stays in the US 6 months each year, she will qualify to draw on your SS.

Yes, you are a Norte Americano, and she is a South American. The locals resent it if you do not recognize that they are Americans also. If you are asked your citizenship it is more proper to answer Norte Americano, or US.

Obviously you have not been in Ecuador for very long because "everyone" would refer to you as a gringa.

From what you have chosen to share with the group you are a young woman without a university degree and no means of independent financial support who is contemplating marriage to an Ecuadorian man she has recently met and trying to accomplish thisdo before next month when you may or may not return to the USA and North Carolina wher you plan to matriculate your final semesters of your undergrad education.

Do your parents approve of your plans? What are your plans after the wedding? Where will you live? How will you support yourselves? What about kids? Have you met his family?

If you are truly a mature young woman planning your life with your prospective life partner, your question, and your responses, would not take the attitude of a spoiled teenager who didn't get the sweater she ordered it would have a quite different sense.

Something doesn't quite add up with our bride to be and her "amor". (Such as that should have been novio or fiance).

And this is not sarcasm. This is calling it like I see it.

Susan, you SO articulate. I have missed that, lol.

I'm still stuck here in NC, (may get back down next month... working on it now)
But seriously, come to NC (not my birthplace) and say what you just wrote, and hon... you would get looks of confusion and probably hear the word "huh?" a time or three.
...so, much of that may have flown high over the head of the young brings...

Oh, I think I like the new mobile format of the site.
- hope you are well :)
