Can anyone local to the area (Susan would be one of those, I'd imagine) tell me how much damage to buildings etc. was caused in the Salinas/La Libertad area from the earthquake? We have friends living not far from there and are a bit worried about them. (Have not had contect from them, but that isn't uncommon, as they travel a bit).
Thanks in advance.

Hi and sorry for the delay getting back to you.
According to the Alcalde (Mayor) of Salinas all is well there and I have reason to believe the same of La Libertad.
There has been serious damage in Puerto Viejo and in Esmeraldas and also in Guayaquil where an elevated road collapsed.
At this time the fatality count in Ecuador up to 77 and over 570 injured regrettably the dawn will no doubt reveal more.
This was a big one 7.8 on the richter scale ...
Here in Montanita we had a good shaking and many folks left to head back home to the city and check on things.
We were without light for about 15 minutes maybe 30. Hola Ola where I tend to chill was on generator during that time.
Twitter by the way is the very best thing to follow for situations of this sort.
You will be able to follow everything and link one to the next.

Thanks for getting back to me. The more I read, the more depressing things are...some 246(?) dead now and 2500 injured!
I understand that there have been ~130 aftershocks also...I hope things stabilise soon, for everyone's sake there.

Here @ the malecon, no structural damage among buildings...inside, aesthetic damages/cracks in every apartamento. It's unusually quiet here on the beach Sunday morning. Every one seemed to rush to go back home. Early this morning, only a few are strolling on the beach.

Cora...THX for the info...not a lot outta Salinas. Glad to hear so little damage and injuries. Most of the buildings along the Malecon are older construction but suffered little damage. GREAT news! Not surprised everyone "cutout"soon to get back home to see what and/ or who may have been hurt. Our prayers go with them and all Ecuador!!!!! GOD bless Ecuador!
