Traveling back to the states with a cat

I need some advice. My husband & I have lived in Manta 6 years. LIke many of our fellow expats, we took in a stray kitten and she is part of our family now. Every year we have been here we travel back to the states in August for family reunions. We have always had someone stay in our home to care for Sissy. This year, due to the earthquake devastation here in Manta, our apartment will be under renovation for 8 mos. to a year. We do not have the option to have someone pet sit for us in our home this time and are looking at taking her with us back to the states and staying for possibly 6 months while reconstruction is going on. We have never travelled with a pet before so I am looking for guidance - which airlines are most cat friendly; what we can do to help her with the trauma of all the noise & people that will surround her for the 20+ hours of travel time; what to expect in cost of travel for her, etc. - ANY guidance will be most appreciated. p.s - just a little background - Sissy, our cat, jumped out off our terrace out of our 4th floor apartment the night of the earthquake. When we finally found her the next morning she was physically unharmed but she would not eat for 10 days - we had to force feed her milk & yogurt with a syringe - and she stayed constantly outside on the terrace, under a towel on a lounge chair. Our apartment suffered considerable damage but it is still livable and we have all utilities so we chose to stay here until we go back to the states. She still looks at cracks in the walls every day like it is upsetting to her. She only started sleeping with us in our bedroom again last week. Just this week they started the renovations on the building next to us and she spends all day every day under the blanket in our bedroom. We want to find a less stressful living arrangement for her asap. Again, thanks for any and all guidance/suggestions.
