Does anyone now resident in Ecuador know of a source for the supplements
ácido lipoico or lactobacillos acidophilus
They are pretty common here in the states. Antioxidants I believe.
A source in the south of the country preferably, cuenca, Loja, Guayaquil.

How about a bowl of plain yogurt with mixed fruit? But in supplement form, I would think that either Chile or Colombia or Peru would have a vitamin/mineral/supplement industry.........Weve got lots of Colombian and Chilean products here in Pan but I can say Ive ever seen an acidolphilous that wasnt out of the U.S. And xpensive...........

Sin, lactobacillos acidophilus is a (lacto= dairy-based?) 'pro-biotic', i.e. often found in yogurt, etc., it populates your gut with 'good' flora/aids in digestion. Don't know about the other.

Sin, Maybe I set you up with milk Keifer for the probiotic stuff although I prefer makiing my own Kraut. Great source if done right. The other stuff, just get old gracefully. I don't know anything about it but I am sure there is some around Cuenca in the Natural stores.

You could just ferment your own vegetables (extremely easy). I think they are probiotics too.

Lacteol Forte is one of the many products readily available at any pharmacy here in Ecuador. As tablets or powder, lactobacilos acidófilos, " indicadas en el tratamiento de diarrea, colon irritable, restaurador de la flora intestinal"
Anyone who has taken antibiotics for a stomache bug should follow up (not in conjunction but after) by taking this.
Yogurt may not always have live cultures. Fermented vegetables may also carry salmonella and other bacteria you do not need and which can be unhealthful.
Remember, you are coming to a completely new continent and your immune system is not naturally prepared to protect against all the flora and fauna it will be exposed to. Give yourself an opportunity to adjust slowly, comfortably and wisely.

Sin, I make cabbage. It is delicious raw! At first it was a pain in the rump to keep it submerged and pure. So, being the genius that I am, I invented a system that takes all the guess work out of it. It cost less than $5.00 and works great. I have made pickles and other fermented vegs with great success. Did it make a difference in my digestive track? YOU BET! I have been able to let my stuff ferment for over a month at a time without any contamination. I will show you when you get here.

Since the tipping point for gaining or loosing weight is just a few percentage points either way - the gut zoology might make the difference. The amoeba infestation I had last year made me drop lots of weight. Returning to the states and living here six months puts thirty pounds back on. I know that a couple of months after my return to Vilca I will loose that weight. Happens every year. The locale may influence gut biota. Well, it would, wouldn't it?
anyway, these supplements are not for me.
Like the guy that walks into the shrinks office with a chicken sitting on his head and says, "Doctor I'm here to see you about my brother"
Maybe I should pay more attention to the little beasties I ingest.
yours for digestive health, sindigiriendo
