I've been reading some of the forums on here about Cuenca (Ecuador), and I feel like a lot of expats, retirees, and travelers are making up their minds way too fast when it comes to moving to another country without looking at all of the options. I believe in efficiency, and I want to talk about what I've found to be the best place to retire. After traveling around the world, searching online, and making a lot of mistakes, I finally found a place that has it all, plus provides an amazing adventure almost every day: Medellin, Colombia.
From the moment I stepped out of my American Airlines, I felt a different, yet familiar vibe. I claimed my bags, got into my Uber, and started my descent from the airport into the beautiful city of Medellin. I was one of those guys that never believed in love at first sight, but at some point, the car took a left, and there it was. I was greeted by the most unbelievable city, surrounded by welcoming mountains, a clear blue sky, and an almost indistinguishable river that separated the two sides of the valley. My heart felt warm, and I thought to myself, "Wow... I'm home". This is when it began, and I fell in love with the city. Everyone will tell you the same thing: weather is amazing, people are extremely warm, and women are incredibly beautiful. But, for me, it wasn't just that. In Medellin, I found a place that I could call home. I contacted Brad Hinkelman, at Casacol, right in my second week of being here. He helped me out with the process of purchasing real estate, and now I'm buying my second property (I own a home, now getting an investment property).
In Cuenca, I was actually quite disappointed, because I had great expectations about the city, but it's really not what people say it is. I invite everyone here to visit Medellin, Colombia. If you're around here, shoot me a message. We can go out for a beer and I can tell you more about it.
There's actually an amazing article comparing the two cities. You can read it here: http://medellinliving.com/medellin-vs-cuenca/
Brad's site is: en.casacol.co These guys are amazing, so once you make up your mind to move to Medellin, he's your go-to guy. *I'm not getting paid to write this*

'Officially', Medellin has SEVEN TIMES the population of Cuenca. At some point I look forward to visiting Medellin, and I hope I fall in love with it too, but comparing the two is like apples to oranges.

You´re comparing a city of skyscrapers with a world heritage site...
... things are going to be a tad slower in Cuenca.
You are also comparing Central America with South America, which are also, well, two different places geographically and historically as well as culturally.
Rather like comparing the USA with Australia and wondering where the kangaroos are because some from of English is spoken in both places...
By the way Cuenca has the llamas...just so you know :)

I lived in Medellin for a month and I will never go back. The traffic is a nightmare especially with all the motorcycles driving with no respect for the laws. It is congested and dirty except in the luxury areas. Who ever said it had a 'spring-like climate' must have come from some place with intense heat. It is hot in Medellin usually in the upper 80's. A good place to live would be at Rionegro right outside of the airport, 2000' higher gives you a nice climate and you are also close to the good things in Medellin, namely the supermarkets and malls other than that it is a croweded hell-hole! Anyone that wants to live in a city that size would be better off in San Diego.... I'm happy in Cotacachi!

Yes its apples to oranges, but its not in central america, haha.....Whatevergave youthat idea O.H.? Ive been to Colombia 5 times and love it, but have never been to Medellin cuz Im not a big city guy and I know its crowded and polluted. But it does haveits unique charms....And the paisas are the best in this part of the world........If theres a greatlookin chica in Ecuador chances are shes from Colombia, haha..........Ecuador Dean knows what hes talkin about............And Cuenca truly is a treasure..........a small, colder version of Cartagena.........with its own unique charms.......but way too cold for this Hawaiian........

Wow, O.H. Despite our differences, I really would have given you more credit than that......Are you sure youre qualified for this strenuous and contentious job as moderator? I have no doubt that there are some pretty girls in Manabi Province......I saw a few here and there.........but face it. Ecuador is not famous for its gorgeous sexy spunky women........Colombia is and for good reason.........but to the crux of the matter, if you dont believe me, then take it from wikipedia.....the notion that Colombia is part of Central America is nothing short of ludicrous: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America

Oh DL - she tries so hard to be right *all the time*, let's cut her some slack on exactly where Colombia is... (Or mebbe she's a closet Trump-ette? He makes up outrageous 'facts', then doubles down when challenged.) The only place in Ecuador which I remember seeing a SHOCKING number of good looking locals was in Loja: old 'seats' of power often wear nice 'genes' - like BsAs - a hundred years after their denim has otherwise faded;~)

Me maxima culpa,
Central America ends at the southern border of Panama and the northern border of Colombia...
What was I thinking? My apologies for the brain fart. Kept seeing the map in my head and yet ... ah well...
My only excuse: ... those mango daquiris... mangoes have special properties you know ...
... which would also explain... why you folks haven´t seen Grasshopper online for the past few days..
... though he does seem to prefer mora...just saying.
As for the women of Manabi... and the men of Manabi... hey suit yourselves... that´s an argument I won´t even get into. I know what I see every day on the beach. And you can ask Grasshopper about that too :)
It´s almost 4:20 we should be catching up shortly.
Happy Saturday, from Montañita...

Hwy WS/
man I hate it when I write a decent comment and it vanishes. which just did happen..
ok to summarize -(and make life easier for Dumass in the process)
Montinita is great _funky little town ..VERY cool and unique ..
As for what anyone looks like, since you guys were talking about it... I am sure there is plenty of eye candy for the ladies here.. but daaaaaamn.. I have pushed my jaw shut more than once, looked up and thanked the Bikini God for blessing us with the string and thong..
Been a little yucky feeling so I haven't done much. Susan was kind enough to bring me some Cipro, a Ham and cheese sandwich and a bud and wrap.. so I really appreciated that. ..oh and I will be up for 4:20 today if you want :)
First thing I did when I got here was swim.. well.. no the first thing I did was have a few drink.. knocking one over.. then swam.
The RED flag was flying on beach.. meaning very rough water and big waves. that means "stay out" in some books - means go have fun in mine.
I went out way past the few surfers on boards. Every time I was facing a big wave, had to take a big breath and dive under it.. (you will NOT face the damn thing) and come up later on the other side.. gives ya about enough time to get a breath and do it again.
Finally got out pretty much past the breakers and got it together for the long swim back..
Hey Dumf@ck go on - call BS on that one.. I have a witness..lol
Hey = why are you even here man? You don't live in EC.. or the states.. You spout sh@t no one cares about and frankly your a dickhead and you are quite insane... Oh and denying that you sent me that low brow PM? your a little bitch as well.
I got to thinking about it. If you spend all this time on here - and on the all these wingnut sites you post links to - I'd bet a months pay your dumb ass stays on a dozen and half websites - meaning you have NO life..
So if that is what you call "enlightened" well baby - color me blissfully ignorant.. i DO things.. you type.
But hey bro.. I wasn't bothered by your no brainer insults... really I wasn't
but just outta principle? the "stupid indian" remark means you had maybe better stay in Panama at that keyboard you call a friend. Because I am not your friend.
Remember.. loose lips.. (well, sink ships) but they often are followed by loosened teeth. Come on down - show ya what that means.. "bro"

Oh the beach of Montañita is a sight to behold ... because it has very happy, trankilo folks... families, friends, dogs ...
...and gorgeous South Afrikan Surfers who run up out of the water just to say hello and give you a kiss on the cheek and a really tight hug!
...And ... just to keep this straight...
Aidan is his name, he is about 24, and Grasshopper was right there so I have a witness!
... I LOVE MONTAÑITA!
...keeps me young !

What's up, Big D?
You pretty much nailed what I meant right there.. but no.. he hails from Panama and comes here to jerk his quaker..lol or something about as useless.. who knows... (or even cares really)
lol.. old and dying of cancer,,huh? ALL the medication I take? I only take one (1),, buttmunch. And that one sure as hell wouldn't cause me to black the F##k out and write something I don't remember.. Oh yeah - you just told us you are an old drunk.. sorry.
Nah man.. I;m 52 and in great shape, thank you for wanting to know.. albeit a little creepy.
I am actually a really pleasant person - enjoy life, and as Susan mentioned, do things that keep me young too. As far as being a "tough guy" ...sorry, I am 5'1" and 98 lbs.. so I couldn't fight my way out of a wet paper bag..
Lol... yeah right. Not. add a foot to that and 100 pounds. But who gives a damn? You are a sad old blacked out drunk troll, I would never really hit you. I am pretty damn sure I would just feel really sorry for you... feel inclined to watch you don't fall and break a hip or something.. honestly.
Sorry to disappoint you, Dumluck. But no.. not on a load of meds.. do not drink myself blind.. do not have cancer or anything else. Tough?
lol.. yeah sure.. why not? very much so. Damn good looking too.
There... now you can spank it, just keep your trap shut.. vow of silence and all.. (you know how it is)

Actually the only illness Hopper has...had...was a touch of ...uh...tourist tummy.
Fixed him up with a packet of cipro, a bottle of gatorade, a ham & cheese croissant and ... something to stimulate hunger...
... now I unfortuneately... have ... nasty chest cold Thought it was just my allergies and a nasty cough ...but ...grrr... didn´t get better in a week and I went to the local doc and ... yeah ...great green nastiness... bummer.
Kind of over did it on my little move last week and well... no excuse ...got bit by a bacteria because I wasn´t taking care of myself. Bad Mod...bad bad...
So if you are looking for me, I´m in bed with the dog and cat kids, my Kindlea and a huge bottle of OJ, along with my pharmaceuticals: salbutomol & cipro, Nothing serious and I can get out for the important stuff like buying dog and cat food ... but still
Now if someone would like to bring me some hot wonton soup from the Chinese place as you head into town... I would not be amiss to some room service ... I´m on the corner of Church and Park and up two flights from the Western Union office.
...just sayin...

It could be argued that Colombia is in both south and central america.
Some geographers consider the Rio Atrato to be the continental demarcation.
Also, some Colombians do not recognize Panama as a valid entity and consider it part of Colombia proper.
All Colombians take offense to the persistent misspelling of the name of their nation.
